Cheap fares to the USA

< $1200 all in isn't too bad - but the NRT-LAX vv legs are "fun" to put it mildly!

The mileage earning restrictions (Q class) also makes it difficult to credit points to either scheme (although, as pointed out by you @ FT the JAL/AA option is fairly good if crediting to AA)

I think we'll see another Qantas sale soon with similar prices, or maybe closer to $1300.

Getting seats on QF from SYD-NRT always seems to be difficult in discount y and discount J. Perhaps JAL is the better option.

And they are even more fun it you have a few eVIPs lying around! Still a shorter sector than SYD-LAX.

No. As I mentioned in the FT thread eVIPs can't be used on Q class according to the wiki:

eVIPs (sometimes called VIPs or VIPOWs) are system-wide electronic upgrade certificates awarded to Executive Platinum members annually and to qualifying members who reach a multiple of one million lifetime miles - see Elite Levels for details. Each eVIP can upgrade up to three segments of a one-way trip anywhere AA flies. There is no co-pay for eVIP upgrades from any upgradeable fare and the eVIP can be used to upgrade any passenger - including non-AAdvantage members. eVIP upgrade requests cannot be made online, only over the phone with an agent.

eVIP upgrades to First and Business come out of the A and C inventory classes, respectively. Any flights originally purchased with I or O fares, and flights between North America and Asia, Europe, India or South America originally purchased with a Q fare, are not eligible for Upgrade Award redemption.
Additionally not eligible for the 10k AA bonus. Might be eligible for the QFF 5k bonus.

Ahh, forgot about that for Asia flights. The only times I have used them for NRT-USA flights have been for D or J upgrades to F.

Yes, check out UA ex-SYD or ex-MEL to SFO or LAX. Plenty of return fares under $1K (including all taxes) for departures prior to June 16th. Hope this is start of some very attactive fares, even over the peak June/July/Aug period.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

...now if only QF could match these fares...
I guess they believe they can count on a level of loyalty. Still, their prices are down (but not as much as the $1100 available in January).

The current Ex OZ, $1350 is about 40% less than what they were charging last year.

yes that is true, however with sub $1k fares on offer by 2 other airlines, and we still havent seen Delta weigh in with promo fares, I feel QF will have to come down a little bit more.

That $400 difference ($380 to be exact) would pay for a SFO-LAS return P fare which would easily compensate the points and SC's with QF (240SC's over 90SC's SYD-LAX/SFO) plus earn UA/VA points

AIR NZ now also offering return fares under $1K ex Syd & Melb for USA West Coast destinations including departure dates up until June 27th. So with Qantas, United, Delta, AIR NZ & VAustralia we will have five airlines vying for the trans-Pacific traffic.

I can feel a price-war coming on! :D

The cheap Air NZ flights are also available on the Air NZ website on selected days (eg depart Brisbane 28 Apr, return 6 May) @ $1073.

( Eligible for Status Points accrual except when purchased with Airpoints Dollars
Not eligible for Airpoints Confirmed Upgrades)

I wonder if Qantas will have a "soft" sale - ie silently drop prices rather than announce a sale. The issue though is that they have the "Kids fly free" promo for a little while yet, so will be reluctant to price match...
