I think I may have royally screwed up - my 14 day cooling off period is over and my inability to properly read the policy disclosure has left me without insurance for things that I want that are detailed in the fine print.

Has anyone had experience changing their insurance policy with QBE please? I will ask them tomorrow but I was curious to hear if anyone else has managed to. I'm guessing it isn't possible given that it is a contract but I guess it's worth asking.

Thank you.

Always possible to vary a contract. The 'cooling off period' is just a chance for you to opt out of the contract for free within 14 days. But if you're asking to vary the contract, that might be different.

* Tell them your needs have changed.
* Check if there is a higher level of cover (a different policy) which better suits your needs.
* Ask whether they will insure you under that policy if you pay the difference.

As it sounds like you want to upgrade, I doubt you'll have an issue. As said, cooling off is about cancelling without cost. Particularly if you want to give them more money, I'd say they'll be amenable.

I have found QBE to be an excellent company to deal with. Last year I purchased my policy and later received a phone call to check my details because they thought I had purchased a policy that exceeded my requirements.

After a bit of discussion the consultant suggested a cheaper policy which ahd everything I needed. The refund of the other policy was handled very quickly as well.

When I needed to claim (stranded in BKK during the AP occupation) I was able to speak to them on a toll free number and be assured that I was covered and what I had to do (essentially keep receipts) and the value of accommodation for which I was covered. DFAT personnel were amazed that I had already been advised that QBE were covering the extra costs because they were dealing with lots of people who had already been declined.

Upon my return to Australia I claimed and received my money within a fortnight.

I reckon you will be pleasantly surprised when you speak to them. I look forward to hearing the outcome.
