I may be entrusted to be taking a very precious long gown to the UK in September. We are booked in J on Qantas from Adelaide to Denpasar on Qantas, and the J in Qatar from DPS - DOHA - CDG and then plane (not booked yet, maybe train) to Manchester. The precious item will be carried as Hand Luggage obviously.

Can I assume that such an item will be treated with care onboard and anything special I should say to crew, and how I should pack?

I took mine onboard Melbourne to Sydney to Honolulu to Kona without too much drama. On the A330 they’re happy to hang it. Had mine in the dress bag but folded in half (hung around the hanger). 737 there was no where to hang it so it was placed in the overhead, same on the HA flight. Was fine at the other end, not even a wrinkle.

I wonder if it happened to be 'packed' in an opaque cover, if you should declare it to be a 'wedding dress' (or maybe it is :)). Such would I think get more care from crew than just a 'gown'. Maybe even write 'wedding gown' on the outside so even if it had to go out of your sight, it will make crew think twice if they have to handle it. Board early, obviously and if given to a crew member, mention to CSM.

Sounds like a plan ;).

Generally its in a long, white dress bag/cover that screams to most women, "wedding dress".

Coworker (in Y) put her dress in a box and put it in overhead, had it steamed when she got to Fiji. It was a large white cardboard box with handle that they use to preserve dresses.

A little OT - is this an award booking? Good luck with getting the precious cargo there

Yes. Ours is. Why would it be different though? No. Wait. We paid for this trip. DSC on part of it too. HL for it.

No reason just thought it was an innovative way to go to Europe. Looking at options for my next trip. Thinking about visiting RTW travel here in Adelaide to see what they can do for me

They'll know it's a gown, wedding dresses tend to be pretty obvious given the size and colour of the garment bag.
Award flight won't matter, FAs dont give two hoots about that. As you board just ask if they can hang it for you .

Ah. Gotcha. The weird route. Qatar had this crazy sale in J out of DPS into CDG back in November. Return just had to be out of CDG from memory and we are flying CDG-DOH-ADL.
