We will be flying domestically with VA in a couple of weeks and hubby needs to have some sporting equipment with him as it is a national tournament. The problem is that it is fragile and we do not want to check it in.
I have been contacting VA several times with this issue, but we seem to get different answers every time. One says we have to check it in as an extra bag, another one as fragile excess baggage at the additional cost of $200, one says pack it in our bag and a fourth one just bring it on board.

I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this. The box is not big, its 82x10x5cm and weighs about 2 kg. Could he bring that one on board in addition to a backpack with a laptop or would that be considered two carry ons?

Its just that I dont want to stand at the airport at 3.30 in the morning, repacking bags. :p

I wonder how long is the overhead space bin.

I have seen a person bring on a didgeridoo that seemed at least that long so I guess it can be done but its a cough shoot, depends on the person at the gate.

Thank you for your reply. The item is shorter then the fragile carry on musical instrument allowance, ie 85cm's. I guess we will have to take a chance and worst case scenario we have to change bags at the airport.

What is the actual equipment ? some items are not allowed onboard for security reasons

I'm thinking pool cue,but that's a guess

Well any one who has seen a pub brawl would know that they are often used as Weapons ……

I once had Brisbane airport security tell me that my carry on luggage Scuba regulators could be used as a weapon "by swinging them around"

Check it, they'll stick a bag tag to it.

I've travelled with a table like this as checked (not wrapped or boxed, just as is) with a bag tag stuck to it. The baggage handlers even put a coke can in one of the drink wells when it emerged on the carousel.
