Flew back from Melbourne this afternoon on VA849, flight delayed while they had to remove approximately 12 carry on bags and put them in the hold as there was no more room in the main cabin.

When will airlines start to crack down on the amount of carry on luggage some passengers take on board? I saw one guy with two bags on wheels and a huge back-pack - did he seriously think that was reasonable?

Sorry for the rant but as someone who flies two or three times a week this issue is getting worse and worse and it is time the airlines acted.

Is there actually enough room, if every passenger brings on the amount they’re allowed?
So if every passenger brought on board a sub 7kg XxYxZ dimension bag, a jacket & a handbag ... would it all fit? Or are they relying on people bringing on less than they’re allowed?

With a quick search I couln't find how many bins (overhead lockers) there are on a typical B737-800 but one discussion on a variant stated that the number of 'standard' pieces of carryon that could be fitted above our heads was a little less than the number of seats.

I almost always pop my backpack under the seat in front of me. I've once had an aggressive QF staff member tell me to put it in the overhead bon, but no other airline staff have done this even when my backpack has had up to nine kilograms in it.

We all observe that the size and number of bags being brought on board has risen, especially domestically. I suppose most airlines (especially legacy ones) don't want to hold planes up by checking compliance with the rules.

They need to crack down on it at the gate, i see some crazy cough boarding virgin flights weekly and nothing is ever said. I also routinely see pax putting their bagging in the overhead storage above rows 3,4,5 and then taking their seat in row 20odd.
