Carry on baggage on budget airlines

My colleague recently flew on Tiger with hand carry only and he was less than 0.5KG over the limit, and Tiger refused to allow him to take stuff out of the bag and ask him to either pay up or don't board the aircraft. At the end he relented and paid up for the overweight carry on luggage.

I know that Tiger is a budget Airline, but is this taking it a little too far or am I setting my expectation too high for budget Airlines? I understand if the bag is a few KG over the limit, but I felt it was a bit harsh given it was just above the limit.

Sorry if I missed a similar post, I am just really surprised when my colleague told me the story and thought to check with the community here to hear everyone's thoughts.

You did say Tiger.

They have to try and make money somehow. It’s not just about the cheapest seats.

Edit: However, not sure how he was conned into not dumping stuff to keep the bag within limits. Did they put him in a choker hold.

That's true, I must say I never flew with Tiger or any budget Airlines for the last few years, and given this story I don't think I will fly with them any time soon!

Edit: Looks like I got your old post, I am also scratching my head about how he wasn't allowed to dump stuff from the bag, but he isn't a regular traveler so maybe he panicked.

Find the nearest rubbish bin. Must be some disposable items in there that would add up to 0.5kg.

They can't refuse you to remove items out of your bag to leave in the bin. It's your property, you can do with it as you wish

I wonder if the bag-weighers receive a commission on overweight bag fees? Sounds very zealous for 500 grams.
