On the weekend we're travelling to London with Emirates. Then 3 weeks later we're travelling LHR-JFK-LHR with Virgin Atlantic.

It's my first big trip in a while, so we've been doing the usual research. What I found about carryon baggage puzzles me.

Emirates has one set of sizes or limits for carry on, whilst VA has others. Thing is, VA's limits are smaller, meaning that my supposed "industry standard" wheelie type carry on bag can go on board with Emirates but it's 50mm higher (or deeper, depending on which way you look at the bag) than what's allowed for VA.

(440x200x410).

Why can't the airlines all settle on a standard size?

When I travelled with Jetstar earlier this year I found that it wouldn't fit into the cradle that they have to checking baggage sizes. Well, I could fit it but not without some heavy duty thumping and kicking.

Thankfully, at the gate they didn't ask me to put it in the cradle. I was lucky that they were victimising some poor bugger cos his bag was 20mm oversize.

I don't really want to get into that situation at LHR, given that VA's excess baggage fees are astronomical.

Also, I have to carry a CPAP machine with me. I can't risk having in my checked baggage because if it's lost then I'm without it and I have bad sleep apnoea (insurance will cover it presumably but trying getting $2,500 out of any insurer...) And neither VA nor Emirates have responded to my queries about whether I can carry it on board separate to my allowed carry on baggage. Naturally they allow some sports equipment, like that's really important.

I've love to hear from anyone who's had experience in these matters...
