Well done, CBR!

In a fine gesture to the memory of a great Australian, Canberra Airport is to name a building within its Fairbairn precinct The David Warren Complex.

The decision is also a tribute to the campaign run by Sydney school student Eve Cogan, who has been seeking to have an airport, particularly Canberra Airport named after the man who invented the ‘black box’ flight recorder, as it has been known ever since the bright orange device came into being.

Just a building? No David Warren Airport, then?

That is hugely disappointing. Only the naming of the full airport would be a fitting tribute.

It's certainly a start (and I did sign the petition). I wonder which building they are planning to name? There are a lot of non-aviation related building's out at the airport, so naming a generic set of offices to me doesn't quite have the same ring to it as naming the terminal.

It better not be the car park. :(

One of the car park attached to the terminal would be better than say one of the offices at Majura park... At least then people who are about to fly will see his name... I'm not sure who is out at Majura park these days, but I do believe there is a lot of empty office space out there, thus if they where to name one of the buildings out there after him, chances are no one will see his name...

The Australian inventor of the black box flight recorder has been honoured with the naming of a Defence building in Canberra.

The Assistant Minister for Defence, Stuart Robert, announced yesterday that the Canberra headquarters of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is being named after the late Dr David Warren who developed the "black box" to help in the investigation of aircraft accidents.

Dr Warren invented the black box flight recorder in the mid-1950s when employed at one of DSTO's predecessor organisations, the Aeronautical Research Laboratory at Fishermans Bend in Melbourne.

The black box is the most famous invention developed in that laboratory, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The laboratory also has a world-wide reputation for pioneering aircraft fatigue testing for which it has won two international aeronautical science awards.
