Can you take the alcohol-based hand sanitiser on planes?

We are booked to fly to Bali at the end of the month and while loo paper is still readily available there apparently there is a shortage of hand sanitiser at the moment. Unfortunately the hand sanitisers we have are the alcohol-based ones and they have a red Flammable Liquid diamond on the label - anyone know what the story is with taking them in checked luggage and carry-on?

I’ve been taking hand sanitiser on all my international flights RTW ( incl USA) - no probs, just scanned in the bag with the other LAGs. But your sanitiser would probably fail the ‘dangerous goods’ declaration at check in. They won’t know if you don’t declare ( until someone realises about this and they start checking the lags) so you have a dilemma.

Would also fail on checked bags I reckon.

Carry on will be required to meet LAG requirements of no larger than 100ml.

And the dangerous good declaration - see above.

Might have to find some empty sunscreen or moisturiser bottles...

You'd have to check the alcohol content of your hand sanitizer - but up to 70% alcohol content is allowed for alcoholic beverages... and you can take up to 5 litres in checked baggage: Dangerous goods personal items, toiletries and medicinal items | Qantas

Hand luggage would be subject to LAG rules.

Hand santitizers don't appear on the prohibited items list?

AFAIK, Hand sanitisers come under the medicinal/toiletries banner, so
  • No more than 500g/500ml per item^.
  • All items together must not total more than 2kg/2L.

Didn't see that... but that seems fine too. 2 litres per person should be enough :)

I’m being a bit of a pedant, but not just arguing for the hell of it. It’s an interesting situation.

My focus is not what the stuff is, but that it carries a red ‘flammable liquid’ diamond label. To me, that over-rides it’s intended use and from memory ( only) makes it fall under the ‘dangerous goods’ declaration at check in.

You can’t take a squeeze bottle of kerosene on board and say ‘oh, it’s just a super hand sanitiser’.

But I don’t have access to the wording or symbolism of the check in declaration - can anyone help?

Or you know, just use alcohol in Bali *AS* hand sanitizer... Ethanol is ethanol even when it's mixed with flavourings.. ;-)

You're permitted to take aerosols on board and in checked baggage - and some of those definitely have the red diamond on them (flammable). No need to declare those as dangerous goods (deodorants, hair spray, etc) AFAIK. The QF page linked above doesn't seem to indicate they have to be declared.

Or indeed, methanol ;)

There's lots of things on a plane that are flammable. All the booze to start with. Without a source of ignition your hand sanitiser is as safe as the Hennesey Paradis.

Aerosols in check in is permitted? I thought, without checking the list, that I shouldnt pack them so always bought whatever I needed when I got there.

Yes, I don't recall them ever being banned in my life time.

Aerosols in no more than 100ml containers and with a locking cap should be ok internationally. [For carry on :p]

In Australia, you have to show them I think ( take out and put in tray). At Hobart, I think small ‘travel’ deodorants will pass but big ones not. But we know how variable the ‘rules’ are.

Overseas? I don’t think any would pass, I always pack them in check in, so don’t know for sure.

Edit: I see Serfty clarified wrt size.

He said check in, not carry on.

Too early in the day - besides - look at the title - only way to do that is carry on; 'cause if you check it someone else would be taking the sanitiser onto the aircraft (baggage handler) not 'you'. ;)

But I do get the drift ... :)
