I know is a bit of a loaded question, but are there any rules about taking a tripod or monopod into the cabin?

We are off to KL for a week and then a month in Vietnam, so will be on Malaysia and Vietnam airways.

I guess it may be up to the security at the specific airport, and that being the case, one may say yes and then on the next leg of the journey, they may say no!

Appreciate if anyone had experiences of this recently or can offer advice or of there is a general aviation rule that may apply?

Thanks

Hi John

I was told in SIN once to pack my new tripod bought in the city as I couldn't take it on board so I did with some great effort (hence the reason I was carrying it) , but low and behold, the DF store inside selling the electronic bits had tripods for sale!

I couldn't figure an answer on that one...

I normally pack mine in my check in bag to avoid the hassle, but there shouldn't be a major problem in taking it with you, but there might be some hassle. :p

Tripods are not on the official list of items prohibited:

Prohibited items

And as long as they fit into the carry on dimensions they should be OK.

Well I guess it comes down to the question, what can you do with a tripod that you can’t do with a walking stick ;) in terms of using it as a weapon of course.

It comes down to whether it has sharp metal pointy bits. A tripod should be no problem, but a monopod usually has a spike and would probably be disallowed. I think I've taken a tripod in carryon before with no problem (can't remember for sure though).
