Wasn't able to find a recent thread.

I am contemplating a short 5 day solo visit in October (post school holidays and before schoolies).

Can anyone provide recommendations on where to stay in Byron Bay? I want to be walking distance from restaurants and cafes and the beach - I dont drive so hiring a car isn't an option.

Great places to eat?

Any must do day trips (assuming anything running due to Covid)?

With four adults and a monster , we stayed in a 2 bed apt at Sea Breeze on the main drag.
Top location , just a few minutes walk to the cbd and just across the road to a kid friendly beach.
Heaps of decent places to eat , I am reluctant to recommend as they change owners a bit.

We stayed here a couple of years ago, and it was very pleasant.

We were up there in 2018 and stayed slightly out of the main strip so can't recommend on accommodation. We enjoyed some casual meals at il buco cafe and pizzeria and also bayleaf cafe. Three Blue Ducks restaurant at the Farm Byron Bay was good but you will need a taxi for that one.

Go to Yamba. Half the price, better people.

Had to google where that is, 100km from Byron - thats one bloody expensive taxi/uber. Sorry want to be close to an airport, and stay where i can walk to everything I need as wont have a car. If not for Qld border closure Port Douglas would have been my choice. I looked at Kingscliff too but transport too limited.

#1 son was visiting and wanted to go to Byron.
I was not at all fussed , but as it turned out I found the place quite pleasant.
A really nice walk up to the lighthouse, good long beaches and a bustling tourist trap cbd with heaps of restaurants.
The restaurants options may be a bit sparse atm because of Covid.

There's a shuttle bus and coaches door to door.

Coworker was talking about a trip to Byron but with a list of beach, laundry, kitchen, pool, area to relax and cafes so I mentioned Yamba to her this morning - shes going to look it up so good thread and thanks for the info

I was in Byron about 3 weeks ago just before the Queensland border locked down again. We stayed at Elements which was fantastic but outside of the town. Everything is fairly close in Byron so I wouldn't totally discount that. In town I have stayed at the Beach Hotel which is very central and has attached accommodation. In Byron we ate at 3 Blue Ducks at the Farm, Light Years (Asian), Bay leaf Cafe & Barrio. They were all good. Only Light Years & Bay Leaf were in town. However, there are many good options depending on your taste and budget. Barrio is out of town but near the stop for an historic train which has been converted to solar power. It is only a 10 minute ride from town and runs during the day. Barrio is in a funky shopping district with quirky/unique retail and is worth a look if this is your thing.
Generally, Covid appears to have limited impact on Byron. Most places are trading to some extent and only a small number were closed. If anything it has scared away some tourists so it is less crowded and more pleasant than it sometimes.

I'm a solo traveller who would usually be heading to Byron Bay in August for the Byron Writers Festival. Missed out last year through cancer treatment and this year through cancellation of the festival, but otherwise went every year for about eight years in a row. I don't drive either as a couple of disabilities prevent me from doing so. During my last two visits I stayed in a cabin at Glen Villa Resort. It's a caravan park with plenty of affordable onsite cabins just across the old train tracks from the main part of town. Easy to walk to downtown restaurants and beaches via a footpath across the train line and past the visitor centre. The cabins are a good bet for solo or DINK travellers, with their own shower, toilet and good kitchen facilities if you want to cook there. Onsite laundry with a barbecue area in front of it. A couple of mornings a week there's a market in Butler St close by. The Sunday market in particular has plenty of good food on offer. Byron Fresh is a good place to eat within walking distance, on the main street towards the main town beach. Fishmongers, on Bay Lane, close to Byron Fresh, is a good bet for eat-in or takeaway seafood, and there are several other okay restaurants along that lane. Cafe Bagus, a bit closer to the main beach, on Bay St, has nice Indonesian food at lunchtime. My favourite breakfast place is Bay Leaf Cafe, on Marvell St. There are two okay youth hostels in town too. I've stayed at both, but personally I'd rather spend the bit extra for the greater personal space at the Glen Villa Resort. The only negative: the local council doesn't seem to care a lot for road maintenance, so take a torch when walking back at night as there were a few potholes. Once you're inside the grounds everything is well-kept. If you're a beer lover I can recommend the Stone & Wood brewery tour, which is now running again. The tour includes generous free samples. A long walk or a short cab ride to get to and from there. Provided you time things carefully you can get a regular bus to and from Bangalow, which has some nice old shops, art galleries and eateries. There are also daily guided bus trips to and from Nimbin. The visitor centre can fill you in on what trips are on offer. Choose carefully according to your personal tastes, as some Nimbin tours are for younger people who like loud music and others are for more sedate, older people such as myself.

I looked at Elements (i like their cancellation policy, which says if NSW Health mandates i cant travel then they will refund even if outside normal policy), do you consider it walkable to town for more dining options? Doesnt look too far int he day, I just wonder about walking back alone a night.

Thanks @Robert McDonald I appreciate the tips on things to do :)

Accommodation wise I'm looking for something 4 star since this may be my only break this year a little luxury will be ideal, not looking to cook whilst on holidays (probably should have mentioned both those things), as I prefer to eat out or grab take-out when on holidays. Plus Ive had more than enough of my own cooking being stuck at home all year.

Its good to know there are public transport options (solar train, busses).

The Qantas flight schedule isn't the greatest when you align with accommodation check in and check-out, but not sure I wanna fly Jetstar (costs more than qnats if you want to earn SC's), not considering Virgin as I have Qantas credits to burn.

From the main part of town to Elements is close to an hour of walking. At least when I was last there the train and buses stopped before nightfall so at night it's likely to be either a long walk or a cab. Pretty safe, I think, if you don't mind that much walking, but not a particularly interesting walk. I've done it a couple of times for the exercise during Writers Festival time, when the roads to and from Elements get a bit clogged. Most Writers Festival events are held at Elements. There's a shared cycling and walking path alongside Ewingsdale Rd, which is usually pretty busy at festival times but probably won't be so busy now without festivals and with COVID-19 cross-border restrictions. If you stay at Elements and explore the beach there, don't be alarmed by naked men at the far north end of the beach, some distance from the accommodation. They're more interested in one another's company than in yours.

Thanks MR61 will take a look.

With some restructure announcements this arvo at work, I'm likely to have a new boss within the next 3-4 weeks, so thinking of bringing it forward (chilly weather be damned) to first week of Sept, so leave cant be denied i.e. approved and taken before any management changes. Wanted to wait til it warms up, but really need a break.

Booked for week after next, the short notice meant Elements was all booked out, so ended up booking a boutique place in town called the Beach Shack.

There were some absolute steals on Penthouse at East on Byron, as well as some lovely whole house rentals for $1800 for the week a block from the beach, but would feel guilty taking up something that sleeps 8 for just little old me.

Thanks for the ideas. I will post a review and report back soon.

Got back from Byron Bay last week and stayed 3 glorious nights at the Lord Byron. Its a 10 minute walk to the beach but a 2 minute walk to a Woolies and lots of cafes.

Food recommendations:

Breakfast - Cafe Bagus (try their Nasi Goreng!)
Lunch - Chihuahua (down a little Lakeway but amazing tacos!)
Dinner - Johnsons (try their squid ink gnocchi) or Bang Bang (fantastic thai!)
