I have been following the forums but its my first time posting so hello everyone! I was just wondering if anyone might be able to help me out.

Basically I have a BME-PER-SYD flight in December and I paid for a V ticket. I have only joined FF frequently so I'm only a Bronze member, even though I travel Qantas multiple times a year. After reading around here and looking at cabin upgrades, I was under the impression that it was difficult for low status FF's to get upgrades and even then upgrades were not confirmed until very late in the scheme of things (like 24 hours before the flight). Nonetheless, I requested an upgrade for the PER-SYD sector and straight away it said it was confirmed and the points were deducted.

I was just wondering is this common or is there a completely different process for domestic sectors? Wouldn't higher status flyers get higher priority when it comes to U seats? And also is there any chance that this 'confirmed' seat will be taken by a higher status member who requests an upgrade?

Thanks all :)

If it says confirmed you should be good to go sans an operational change or something. Normally domestic upgrades are instant if there are award seats left. I have had upgrade requests come through after a few days even though there were no award seats left. These were not instant upgrades and I think this is where QFF status comes to play.

There is a limited number of upgrades that go to first in best seated but then more become available closer to departure time depending on how fully the flight is booked. This is where your status kicks in, higher your status the higher up you are in the priority when new upgrades seats become available.

Enjoy your flight!!

Thanks to those who replied it makes sense now! I expected the upgrades to be in demand considering its the 568 on a 333, so I thought best to get in early considering I have no status.

I've never really connected through anywhere before but I'd assume my bag would be checked the whole way through and I would get both boarding passes in BME?

Yep if it is on the one booking your luggage will be waiting for you in SYD. Enjoy the A333 in J. The service is great on this plane and the domestic jumbo(same seats). The very late supper is served just after takeoff and is a full meal.

To get just what you want in the world of travel (notably upgrades and sweetly-priced JASAs), and irrespective of status, my motto is: You can never get in too early .

That's why I have a pile of folders on my desk running out 11 months with planned travel. As fast as I peel them off the top, I'm adding to the bottom :D.

Within 10 days of getting back from a 7-week DONE5 3 weeks ago I had in the bag a low-points JASA to Santiago next May to click into a Galapagos/Amazon trip and another to Jo'burg next August to click into a Tanzania/gorillas in Rwanda trip. Now just waiting for Otober '13 flights to open to close out a DONE4 in Sept-Oct next year.

Of course, being a SFSC not tied to work has certain advantages :p.

Enjoy the ride; there's no going back, you know .

Yeah exactly it makes a lot of sense. How organised are you! Thats the way to do it I guess!

Yeah I most definitely will :) Well its the first time I've really upgraded on a full fare (or a V fare) with points. I have been upgraded on staff many times before but now with next to no availability these days its too much of a risk and its why I'm working on getting some FF status because I know there is no going back

I'm 6'3'' and I went SYD-BNE on a 73H earlier this year in Y and now I know why I have avoided Y for years!

The other point that I should have added to the motto is: Wait for nobody (ie. friends/family who say they'll be in something and then get organised to do it ).

In other words, procrastination is F/F benefits death :p.

Basically, a domestic upgrade may be granted upon [-]resist[/-]request - this will invariably happen if basic U class is available at the time of request.

International upgrades are different being waitlisted until shortly before the flight as SOP.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...
