I'm a bit worried that a cardboard box that I have been quoted as 24" X 18" X 16" may be oversize. I'm in J from JFK. I can't find a particular size reference on QF's website. It won't be particularly heavy, but I won't buy the contents till I find out it is OK.

It's on the Baggage allowance page:

Note: No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg (70lb). Total dimensions of the 3 pieces must not exceed 405cm (159in) and total dimensions of the 2 pieces must not exceed 270cm (106in) with no single piece exceeding 158cm (62in). Dimensions for checked baggage are calculated by adding together the width, height and depth of the piece of baggage.

Thanks eminere. No tape measure handy, but holding my hands apart to what I think may be inches and only checking 2 of the 3 piece allowance, I think I may be OK / will be risking it.

You'll be just fine with that size. I've checked in larger boxes before on QF.

I'm probably missing something here - but I've travelled with a large box (like a big flat-pack - but wasn't!) together with my standard sized suitcases (2x). It's not an issue. Everything got weighed at check-in (in this case, 2 check-ins since my routing was LHR-DFW-BNE-MEL - so check-in at LHR and BNE) and the oversize box I then dropped at the Oversize Baggage counter and picked up from same each time I retrieved my luggage.

As long as the total number of pieces/weight fit in to your allowance you should be fine.

Regards,

BD

Hi,

This should be fine :)
I have included some info from our website below but based off the dimensions you have provided this will come in at 58in and you are entitled to 62in.

Cheers,
Red Roo

Note: that if you have purchased international flights and domestic flights and these are on the same ticket, the international checked baggage allowances apply to the domestic flights too. Where the international and domestic flights are on separate tickets, if the connection time is within the same calendar day* the International Baggage Allowance is accepted on both flights. Be sure to present both tickets when checking your baggage in. Exceptions apply.

I had issues with international and domestic flights were there were issues with allowances being applied to the Domestic leg. BA at Tegel insisted I pay for my 4th bag ( small) was flying first to Sydney QF2 . I showed them the allowances 70 KG ! They insisted I am entitled to three pieces however small these were made no issue. Had to pay extra 75 Euro for that bag! Unhappy yes. It's a slight cough up. If you ask me.
Another person flying in First with me that day had 52 kg piece allowed on the flight. Way above the 32 kg allowance. So exceptions do happen with Qantas but BA is another matter

Thanks for all the comments. From the Red Roo comment, it seems the size only just made it. ;)

Also, good to note the dom - int connection times and ticket requirements in the last 2 sentences in RR's quote.
