bPay doesn't usually count for FF points

I am currently changing my credit card linked for Qantas FF points, and got a final credit card statement with a $74 purchase (Trailer registration) but no award points. On enquiry I was told that most bPay transactions are regarded as bills and do not count for FF points.

I had no idea.

It appears that paying a bill by bPay does not accrue points, but paying the same bill by phone or over the counter does accrue points. I'm guessing I've missed out on thousands of points over the years.

On further enquiry, apparently the service provider can nominate to bPay whether their bills via bPay accrue points or not, but that is not very visible information. At least I couldn't find it anywhere.

So I don't think I'll be using bPay much anymore.

Does anyone know anything more about this?

Thanks

Check your card T&Cs for whether Bpay transactions are eligible to earn. I knowNAB and Citi allow it.

For Westpac, it bPay is specifically excluded from point earning. You need to check the T&Cs of your card.

As a workaround, anything that can be paid at Auspost can be paid via paypal on the postbillpay website. Thus earning full points.

My cards generally provide points for Bpay, but since I have dipped out in the past, I always try to pay via the billers own web site.

e.g. For things like vehicle registration and license payments (in Victoria) I use Vicroads own web site for payments rather than any indicated bpay method.

The only thing I use bPay for are eBay purchases. My Virgin Money CC (Citi) earns points

My ANZ Frequent Flyer Visa card warns me that if I Bpay from it, the transaction is a considered as a cash advance from that card - with the cash advance fee and interest rate being applicable. Thus, even if the Bpay transaction did accrue points (which I'm not sure about), they would be darned expensive points.

Renato

This won't work if the Biller code is not enabled for credit cards on the BPay software ( at Bpay its self) .

You can check on Bpay if the Biller code accepts credit cards

Not quite true unfortunately.
As an example, DEFT payments can be paid in person at a Post Office but not on the Australia Post website.
DEFT can be paid online via other means but a credit card surcharge will apply.

Thanks, learn something new everyday.

Having never used DEFT, I'm assuming that there's no billpay code for Auspost?
