I'm VA Platinum and flying return to Boston, ex Melb. I have some queries and hope to call-on the many wise heads in these forums.
  1. In LA, I'll board a Virgin America flight to Boston. Do I have lounge access in LAX? What are my upgrade options?
  2. From Boston to Syd I will fly Delta. Do I have lounge access in Boston and what are my upgrade options?
  3. Any other suggestions when flying these airlines/routes?

Thanks!

I have just done some flying across the USA. My tip would be to allow LOTS of time to get through security. Security on every domestic flight was full body scan of every passenger plus xray of hand luggage and no liquids. And every domestic flight was a security bottleneck. Boston (Delta) was a nightmare getting through security due to the large number of passengers being funneled through 2 body scanners. I think Delta recommends arriving at least 2 hours prior to your departure time and I personally would add an extra 30 minutes to that. You will get lounge access at Boston, although I was asked to show my Velocity card even though the boarding pass had Elite medallion printed on it. From memory its nice and new but small. Food offerings at breakfast time included cereals, porridge, breads, eggs and a couple of hot options (baked beans) as well as coffee machines.

We fly coast to coast on V America business class. In our opinion easily the best domestic airline. From memory lounge access is available only for C to C flights otherwise it was $45. Pretty ordinary lounge though.

Row three Y on VX is great, at least LAX-JFK. Absolutely love the food too, if you have it in your ticket package. Having done a lot of DL, VX is superior, but DL Economy Comfort is ok. I imagine you'll be in the Loft at LAX which is a pretty average lounge. Curious about your Boston options though.

Just did a similar trip. LAX lounge is Alaska Airlines lounge in terminal 6, but only for first class Pax I believe. You will have Delta skylounge access in Boston. VX flight was excellent in first. Delta were good too.

Thanks all for your advice. Key responses so far:
  • I had no lounge in LAX
  • Virgin America impressive. The brand has mojo and why are they shutting it down? LinkedIn TV was cool, and I was in Economy.
  • Virgin Australia flight Mel - LAX was too cold.

VX was bought out in a hostile takeover and is being shut down for no other reason but to eliminate a competitor. Very unfortunate.

also so be aware that the partnership with VAmerica is ending. As a VA WP, you're better off sticking with DL for all USA internal flights.

Virgin Australia are still codesharing it seems, so if you book a Virgin Australia ticket and they place you on a Virgin America flight you should still get points and SC as its sold with a VA flight number.
