Hi All,

Booking flight from MEL to London for work, business class.

If I book though Malaysia or Webjet can I still get the Qantas status credits and miles - from the Qantas website it looks like I do, but suspect that this is if booked on Qantas.

Currently Red on Qantas and no membership on Malaysia.

Have to book today, so any advise greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve.

Yes, but note the reduced earn for MH on oz-malaysia-europe routes per their website, and that the booking class is even one that earns.

Also many of us would suggest if possible to not book with webjet due to high fees.. but it's up to you of course :)

Subject to booking an eligible fare, yes you will. Note that some of the cheaper fares will not earn.

I would go through SIN then DXB then LHR on EK metal with QF flight number personally.
Full earn QF SC at subclass of J rate.
Flying MH J earns QF SC at flexY rate.

QF does not use Red but Bronze.

And perhaps the OP is considering cost as a prime issue and/or wants/needs a stop in KUL. Also not everyone puts SC/points earn at the top of the priority tree.

And not everyone places the same emphasis on flying EK widebodies. ;)

Thank you for the info.
So if I am reading that correctly flying Mel > KL > UK return, in business class, doesn't qualify for anything. But economy does?
What am I missing?

no it's saying the Business and First buckets (eg: AFCDIJZ) earn at Flex Economy levels, rather than J or F.

The Business Fare Classes, such as (CDIJZ) earn at the Flexible Economy rates, so you find them in the Flexible Economy column. They earn, just not at the Business rate you would expect.

Ah ha! Now I get it, one day I will be able to decipher this all by myself.
Thank you!

I wouldn't sweat it. it's a bit of a smart cough way of doing it because you have to recognise the particular booking classes (eg: C J I D Z A F) that are premium and then note they are in the Flexible Economy section. On first glance I'd think it meant nothing in Business or First qualified as well.

Also to note that B H Y are in Discount Y, which are flex elsewhere.

the whole thing is a mess. I *think* this is a QF choice to push customers who care to book away from MH and onto QF via DXB but have no real proof.

Either way, while detailists like myself understand what that table is saying, it's not at all helpful to the casual user imho.

Agreed. It's a minefield!

For what it's worth I have booked 5 Y sectors on MH in the last 3 months. I got offered the chance to upgrade on all 5 and was successful on 4 of them. The longest was PER to KUL and return. I don't know what the chances are of receiving an offer for longer haul but in my experience they do seem to be pretty forthcoming. It's obviously a risk though, and you'd likely only earn at the discount economy rates.

Also know sometimes MH crediting to QFF can be.. difficult or have some issues (I believe Z class is a known issue, for example).

other than all the above.. Enjoy the MH flying!! :D

So it looks like I can earn 180 status credits, not enough to get me to Silver, dammit.

It would get you to 600 if credited to British Airways Exec Club
But you would need to do 4 BA prefixed flights in addition to be OneWorld Sapphire (equivalent to Qantas Gold). Not sure if the extra cost and time would be worth it for you.
You wouldn't get status bonus on QF flights but would get lounge access, priority boarding, extra luggage for nearly 2 years if you join BAEC just before you fly

Edit-also Qantas don't usually let you bring children as free additional guests into the QC if you are OWS with another programme
Technically you can't join BAEC from Aus but you can either use a friend's address or 'accidentally" enter Austria. You wouldnt choose a complete fiction as thats where they will send the card (though can use the e-version fine)

If this is the aim you may want to consider an AY (Finnair) J fare to europe with QF sectors to/from AY gateways of HKG/SIN/BKK. Those can earn around 300SC each way and can be had for under $6k during the current sale.

I think AY also sell a Y/J combo fare too with the Y sectors to/from Asia.
