I'm vaguely interested in booking some MH award seats next year.

1) Looks like I can't book them online as they don't come up in the search engine - quite a few sources on the internet say that you have to ring up, is this still correct?

2) If I do ring up, how successful am I likely to be if I ask for a waiver of the assistance fee?

Yes

Shouldn't be an issue. If it is - hang up and try a different CSE.

I recently booked some award seats over the phone on a routing/airline combo that did not appear on the website search. At no point was an assistance fee mentioned or charged so I think you'll be OK on this point.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes, you need to call QF to book. But if you want to check availability first you can do so on the British Airways website with a BA Executive Club account.
