I am very excited to announce I recently booked my first ever (paid for by me) Business Class flight to Barcelona from Sydney, using my Velocity points for 2 people. Travelling in July 2019.
I only had enough points to book one way, so we will need to pay for one way fares back to Sydney.

My question is, can anyone confirm which Euro airports we should fly out of? As in, which would be the cheapest cities to fly out of for a one way fare back to Sydney?

Our itinerary is flexible so we can travel to any European city. My very basic research tells me it might be Istanbul (because its the closest?) or Athens, or Barcelona, or Dublin...?

I think we would like to go back home in Business class too & are happy to go any airline & any route.

I had a quick look (17/7 just because that was my last search...) I was VERY surprised to find one way Business class fares at really NON eye watering prices..... (One ways IME are often excrutiatingly expensive) If you don't mind flying Air India you could fly ARN-DEL-SYD for under AUD$2000 each...

UL are also good one way value.

For anyone interested, I have narrowed my choices down to two options:

1. Air India from Stockholm to Sydney via Delhi. Just over $2000 pp. 6 hour stop over from 7:00am to 1:00pm in Delhi.

2. Oman Air from Istanbul to Muscat to Kuala Lumpur to Singapore (3 flights!) $1200, 9 hour stopover in Changi 1:00am to 10:00am (would probably sleep at the Transit Hotel until 7:00am then have breakfast in the lounge)
Then ScootBiz to Sydney $500 (day time flight, flat bed not required), so total only $1700 pp plus cost of transit hotel.

Our basic itinerary ends in London, so would need to factor in additional travel to either Stockholm OR Istanbul from London.

I am leaning towards the latter option because Oman Air excites me more than Air India, even though it is a 5 flight, 2 day adventure.

Feedback welcomed :)

Long distance business class fares ex uk are slugged with a rather large departures tax.
You could get from London to Istanbul with Ukraine airlines for about £100 and that could add an extra 2 flights ( via Kiev) if that convoluted itinerary excites you more! Alternatively BA direct would be about £40 more ( in Y)

I flew Ukrainian International Airlines in 2013 as it was about £400 cheaper. However, this can come with some hideous layovers in what is a very simple airport. I had a long 7 hour wait.

Unless things have changed Australians need a visa to leave the airport and you are about an hour out of Kiev. Something to keep in mind.

Can you cancel the one way velocity for one person and put the points toward getting a return velocity ticket for the other person. Then just buy a return ticket for the person without the velocity ticket?.
