Planning a business trip to China, Taiwan and Japan shortly. Previously have flown J with either QF or CX through HKG which was a nice points and SC earner; however times are tough in my industry and the powers to be are saying to fly PE.

Am OK to fly PE on a day flight, however would like to maximise SC's and points. Am also considering paying the difference myself from PE to J class if the differential is not to great. Being 455 SC off platinum I am also wondering if it is worth the effort to fly with OW carrier or bite the bullet and move to alternatives.

Would be interested in options so that I can
a) Keep the bosses happy by taking a cheaper option
b) Travel in comfort. (hate any onite PE or economy flights
c) get maximum SC and points for future

Thanks

If you can start the Asian part of the trip in Japan and end in Taiwan you could do the following. Go Jetstar 'Business' max form OOL to Japan for $999. About the same cost and service as PE on Qantas but you'll get SCs at the Business rate. Then return from Taipei on Cathay on Business class TPE-xHKG-BNE. Cathay have very cheap business class fares when you start from TPE. All up you should be able to do this for a bit under AU$2000. Which would be cheaper than doing BNE-xSYD-HKG return in PE.

Depending on when you’re going, Qantas has a double SC promotion on to Hong Kong until late-May (I think it is). Well worth J on those flights in that case ;)

Although that double SC to HK offer is good, it is important to note that it was by invitation only (by an email sent late last year) and is not open to everyone. So if the OP did receive it then it is probably worth flying via Qantas to HK, otherwise worthwhile considering other options.

Unfortunately I did not receive the email. I do like the Taipei option. Definitely worth considering.

Just watch the ticket validity, you need to be returning in 6 months or less.

BNE-SIN on QF then 3K SIN-HKG would be good if either you or the bean counters are particularly price sensitive, although SIN-HKG would be in Y.

You could probably also route via SYD or MEL to wring every possible SC out of the ticket.

Kind of a rhetorical question that one! I've yet to meet a bean counter who isn't price sensitive even though it's usually a case of 'penny wise, pounds foolish'. :p

Does this mean I have to purchase a Taipei Bne return? Or can I buy a one way ticket from Taipei to Bne. J class is around $1200 which seems reasonably priced.

No you don't, one way if fine. I think it was assumed that you were buying a return & if that were to be the case if the max validity on that ticket was 6 months you would need to make sure you would use the BNE/xHKG/TPE within that timeframe.

Also check whether you are permitted a stopover on the TPE/BNE CX fare as stopover conditions do vary - I'd look at the fare conds for both OW & RT TPE/BNE fares.

You may need to do Japan first, then China followed by HKG then do TPE last & fly home from there with only a transit in HKG.
