Yeah, likely a rant on my behalf, but I've noticed a few issue at BNE Int. that I think are pretty ordinary for a major international airport.
I admit to not flying into BNE Int very often, but I'm hardly what you'd call an infrequent traveller. A trip I made a few weeks ago highlighted to me the poor signage showing where to go upon exiting customs.
It was the first time I had used the Air Park (first and last). Upon exiting the customs area, what jumps out mostly is clutter. Cattle rails to keep the exit clear and people awaiting incoming travellers interspersed with tables and coffee shops and really, general useless clutter. Of course this also includes all the useless signage, meaning the important signage is lost. I refer to signage to taxis, to limo's, to ride share, to carpark, to rail, to transfer buses, to Air Park busses etc. To move people quickly and efficiently out of an airport, decent signage that can be found quickly and is accurate is imperative.
At BNE, the signage is small and all over the place. The taxi sign is about the size of a shoebox and all by itself and not at the exit of customs. Other transport signs are further away (closer to the building exits, but it means people are aimlessly wandering around trying to find them. I still haven't found the sign for the Air Park bus and when I used that facility, I though the easiest way is to go up to the 4th level departures stop and catch it there, as I knew where that bus stop was (I got dropped off there just a few days earlier). To my absolute surprise, that is the correct and only Int stop for the Air Park bus. No stop at arrivals level. OK fine, but put up bloody big signs telling people!! Also, I had pre ordered duty free to collect. Walked into the duty free area and half way through the shop before I found a free employee to ask. The collections counter was back where I first entered ... behind the door! That's OK as well ... put up a bloody big sign so we can find it!
Last night, I arrived into BNE Int again and the process was steamlined (I knew where the duty free collections counter was this time and was able to laugh at all the others trying to find it), I got my ticket, collected my luggage and progressed rapidly toward the exit. With nothing to declare the customs lady said to me "straight through to the exit". I thanked her and started to go straight through to the exit, however I only took two steps before I saw that straight through has an A4 size red arrow sign and that was it. "Red arrow" I thought. That's normally the declaration line so I paused to look around and saw the exit is not straight through, but a 90 degree left turn so as I started to turn to the exit, another customs lady comes up and quite curtly says "if you don't still have your ticket then exit". I didn't bother acknowledging her as I was already doing what she stated, but as I walked away I heard her say "durr".
A really good look for all the excited new arrivals to Australia. Cluttered exits, poor signage, incorrect instruction and rude staff. Well done BNE Int! (NOT)
OK rant over!
