Good Afternoon Fellow Frequent Flyers,

I should start by reintroducing myself to this forum as I have only been "viewing" for quite some time. My name is Jourdan and I am a QP Bronze member looking at doing a SC run (to obtain Platinum!) in the near not so distant future. If I have posted this in the incorrect sub topic, apologies in advance!

However, I am currently looking at purchasing/using points for a flight to Hong Kong departing Friday 10/09/10 returning 15/09/10. I have enough points for any class but can't decide which is best value for money! The point to cash ratio can get quite confusing considering I got 10,000 free points a while back for signing up to a credit card. I have in excess of 160k points and want to use them as wisely as possible!!

Here are the options I am considering:

Cash Option 1:
Sale Y: $1224
Sale Y+: $2216

Point Option 2:
Y: 65000
Y+: ? (It won't let me book any premium economy using points?)
J: 13000

Would it be worth my while trying to pay cash and points? Is that system a cheap option?

Would anyone advise flying Y one way and J return? Which airline offers the better J option?

Also, which airline has the better/newer aircraft? CX or QF? Service standards will be much better on CX I'm assuming?

Thanks in advance for everyones contribution!

Welcome to AFF, you only get FFP and SC's on any seat awards, those award levels are for classic awards which dont earn anything. I would save your points and grab a paid fare vis SYD to maximise SC's.

And I thought you were moving to MEL Jourdan!

You should come to the BNE drinks I keep inviting you to and you might get some good tips there ;) otherwise, as has been said, the options you’re looking at are classic awards that don’t earn you anything, and even if they did, wouldn’t get you close to Platinum.

There’s no QF Y+ flights to HKG I don’t believe, so that’s why you’re not given the option.

A good question here would be, when does your status year end/begin?

i don't know how many SCs you have at present but I agree that SYD to Hong Kong won't get you any significant progress towards Platinum.

The best deal for SCs at present IMHO is the Starclass flight to Japan (KIX or NRT) from the Gold Coast @ around $790 for business class points and SCs.

Also keep an eye out for opening specials for JQ Starclass to Europe.
