Just sitting in the J lounge wondering why BNE have decided to hold off the works on the new runway, there are 8 waiting for departure, and thats after 7 had already gone in the last 10 minutes

Some rather simplistic reasons why they've held off:
  • BNE has had many projects held off "due to the GFC". Much needed traffic and reception improvements to the domestic airport is one of them (purportedly delayed until at least 2018), along with a new runway.
  • BNE airport was built on essentially a swamp. I don't know if they've even started preparing the land necessary for a new runway, because that process will take significant time, measured in years, not months.
  • There are enough old cranks and uppity upper class idealists living around the airport as well as in well-traversed flight paths. Whilst a new runway wouldn't necessarily increase traffic from more than it is now, those...."people"....will certainly argue that it's a first step towards more traffic and thus a "disruption of their lives". In other words, we'll have an argument a la SYD 3rd runway. And the last thing BNE needs is a SYD-inspired backwards-society stupid curfew.

AND ... the main protagonist, Mr K Rudd, appears to be no longer threatening the Parallel Runway proposal, now he's N0.5.

I believe BAC recently met with the Serious Plane Spotters to recommend an alternative to the Acacia Drive location, which will disappear and resurface as the major taxiway between the two runways. This should provide a more interesting view from the BNE QP.

Just to raise one point.

Where do you think all the dirt from the cross river tunnels went to, it all went to the airport, the 2nd runway is going ahead, it will just depend on when the green light to build the 2nd runway.

The Hawthorne/Bulimba (spelling?) anti airport mob are only a recent development (in geological timescales). I remember reading an opinion piece in a paper during the mid-90s about how, following a change in flight paths, the exhaust fumes had destroy the magic bubble over bulimba that isolated them from the rest of the world. As a result they now experienced what the rest of Brisbane had put up with for years. Main point being they would soon shut once they got over the shock of change.

Anyway, aircraft have flown over Ascot/hamiliton for vastly long than over the other side of the river. Lots of old Queensland money in Ascot.

Markis10, what program or app does that pic come from?

The draft EIS for the Parallel Runway proposal states that (similar to most parallel runways) aircraft arrivals are on one runway and departures on the parallel runway. Therefore the bubble-wrapped residents of Bulimba etc will not be subject to any additional capacity in approaches/departures but will join the rest of BNE in sharing the benefit of increased airport capacity - at a distance.
