My mum booked a ticket SYD-HKG and chose the day flight. Within 24 hours of booking confirmation, she was informed that they had made changes to her flight, and put her on the overnight flight to HKG on the same day in the evening.

She rang up and said she didn't accept this change, so they put her back on the original flight.

This was a Sale fare (O class) paid for with points ie not a classic award. There are still O class seats available on the day flight. It seems like QF is just trying to shift people onto the less desirable overnight flight and see which ones will stick!

How far out is the flight? It's odd for a pax to be shifted within 24 hours of booking. Maybe a new demand curve was applied to the flight as higher yield pax are expected to book?

Without knowing any more I wouldn't suspect a conspiracy at this stage: the system sold an O seat because the flight was profiled that way. If it was reprofiled after your Mum booked then O class may have gone oversold.

The flight is in November. She had received a confirmed ticket so reprofiling after her booking shouldn't affect her. Isn't it strange that she would be shifted to the other flight, when the original flight hasn't been cancelled, and there's still inventory in the same fare class being sold on the original flight?

By pure coincidence, Qantas yesterday retimed its QF117 service from SYD to HKG for travel from November to become an overnight flight (instead of a ~4pm departure). She probably got caught up in that change.

Was she booked on QF117 or QF127 originally? QF127 is still a day flight.

Ah thank you. Mystery solved. Yes she was on the afternoon flight that got retimed. And yes she booked the day before the retiming happened.
