Hi,

I thought I had built up a decent bank of krisflyer points to get me very close to a free return trip to the UK from Melbourne but when I used the singapore airlines system to book the dates I wanted in May 2014 I seemed to only save $500 by using all my points, which was really disappointing - I was still going to need to pay close to $2k.

can I use these points better so how to make my flights cheaper?can I use the points and fly on a different airline?

any help would be much appreciated, as this could be the difference between seeing my family or not in the next 12 months,

thank you

Hmmm, be interested to know some of the ins and outs of the KF program too seeing i just got my fee free for life Citi Signature CC...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The Krisflyer program like many FF programs (the ones were you have to pay fuel fines , taxes and charges) is not that good value for economy redemptions, and in particular if you compare it buying economy fares when on sale, and from all available carriers.

The fuel fines and charges are often pretty much the same if flying in business or first class.

With Krisflyer excellent value is derived IMO with Business Savers. For or Suites Savers are a nice treat, but IMO not as good "value" simply because J is so good.

You could try to split MEL-SIN & SIN-LHR with 1 being cash and 1 being award

You can use a SQ partner airline, but trip must be booked via Singapore Airline. Unlikely to be cheaper in miles or cash

Have a read of the threads here:- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

I just did a dummy booking with some random dates, taxes and fees came to $1064. Are you sure you got 2K in fees?
