With a view to increasing the chance of an upgrade or being seated next to an empty seat -

Whats the best way to find flights that have plenty of vacant seats?

Are there certain days that should be avoided?

Are there certain seating positions ie. isle middle section, that have more chance of being next to an empty seat?

I think your questions are open ended, it depends on a number of factors, specifically:

1. Time of the year - is it school holidays
2. Day of the week - is there a chance business travellers prefer that flight.
3. Is it seasonal travel - CNY or Thanksgiving

Those are just some of the questions to ask? Domestically Mondays and Fridays are worst while Wednesday and Saturday are the best for lighter loads in general, while having status and travelling during school holidays on routes with less frequency do help with ODUs.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

In other words there is no simple answer unfortunately. :(
