Off to HKG with miss Spatsky (5) on JASA. On way back, flight departs HKG at 2330, so figured i would check in about 6pm, go to one of the CX F lounges and let her sleep on a chair for a few hours. Which CX F (or J) lounge would be best for this? Could also use QF F lounge if better?

At present you only gave the choices of CX Pier F or QF First, as CX Wing F is closed for renovations.
With 5yo child I would probably end up going to the lounge closest to gate as it can be long walks in HK.
If on a QF flight this will undoubtedly be QF First as they always get gates close to the lounge.

I agree mostly with moa999. Only thing is that the Pier does have those huge leather seats that are comfy and Day Rooms where you could get a nap. Why would you check in so early? Wouldn't it be better to check in as late as possible? Good luck getting past the Disney store in departures.

If you are at a high gate number then try the pier - you may be able to get one of the quiet rooms, otherwise QF F probably the best bet

Simongr - we are only there for 4 days, and 6.30pm HKG time will be way past her normal Aus bedtime, so she will already be a zombie by then!

Every child is different.....with both of ours we have delayed our arrival at the airport when coming home. Caught quite a few late departures with the kids & subscribe to the "wear them out" point of view.

I would select the best lounge regardless of the kids....therefore, wing J or wing F when it opens.

For my money I'de be at the QF F purely & simply 'cause it's (usually) so much closer to the QF gate - and if Miss Spatsky is anything like Mstr DaveC she will sleep anywhere .....

I agree with Wing F if its open, especially if you can grab a cabana.

the difference between the wing FL and QF FL and the typical QF gates is not that great.

You still need to had back to the central core to access any gate from the QF side.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Thanks guys - went for the QF F option. Check in said Gate 15 (next door) planned. Good lounge, not too busy except for screaming 1 year old nearby who screamed for 3 hours (oh the irony). Miss spatsky managed 1.5 hours of sleep on the 2 seater. Staff very helpful.

Gate change 1 hour out to gate 26. Left lounge carrying asleep miss spatsky and 3 bags when flight called, then get paged half way there. Couldn't go any faster!

Get to gate as agents said it is about to close, then security (random bag check) breaks two out of three bags zippers. Struggle on to flight with asleep child and broken bags - miss spatsky flops into 1A (JASA :) ) and we are off.

My view of screaming children has changed (since having one) from one of 'Can't they shut it up!" to 'oh that poor child' ...... Very ironic indeed!

And the 'random' bag check isn't so random - every flight I've done out of HKG for the last few years has been subject to a bag search (just after checking in at the gate at the bottom of the ramp). Searching for 'liquids'. I do find however that if you open your carry on bags and show them the insides (especially if you are in the P/J queue) the check is very cursory indeed! A bit harder with a limp child flopped over one shoulder however......

Same here - I have lots of sympathy now for parents with 0 - 3 year olds who are screaming in pain. I have less sympathy for people who simply can not control their children and have not prepared themselves and the children for the trip. I have pulled the pin a couple of family dinners/lunches where smallboygr has not been compliant and was impacting other people's experiences. We are now more prepared for the events and plan ahead.

Planning for the DXB flight next year in J is under way... He knows how to operate the iPad - just need to find the right headphones for him... and get him used to them...

I know what you mean - preparation is key! We carry about bags of books/plastic cough/food & drink whenever on a flight/train etc

And Davec jnr hated wearing headphones - until a new Thomas the Tank Engine movie arrived on the ipad and it would only 'work' with the headphones on. A few more practices and a flight to Paris and back earlier this year was amazingly painless! They were just relative cheapies from Typo but looked pretty cool so he was happy (big white things - very OTT but every FA loved them and so therefore so did he!).

I think I might have missed the boat with the "only work with headphones" trick as smallboygr knows how to operate the volume controls on the iPad...
