Hi all

I have never been particulaly loyal to a domestic carrier (generally preferring Virgin) but I've been racking up QF status points lately and with some effort can get to silver in the next few months.

In May this year I will be going to europe / canada on a RTW ticket. This is the first serious travelling I will have done. How beneficial are the business class check-ins etc (www oneworld com/ow/ffp/oneworld-status) when travelling OS in unfamiliar airports?

On a separate note, I am moving to NZ and will be travelling ADL-CHC a fair bit. These flights are mixed QF/JQ and I am a little bit confused on the benefits of silver for the JQ legs. The extra baggage allowance would be very useful. Anyone know how many SC I would get for ADL-MEL-CHC?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

If I read the fine print correctly having QF PS status will save you luggage charges on AA in the states. And with the RTW coming up the 25% bonus - while not a great incentive is better than no bonus.

If you can deal with the cost a quick couple of status runs in the USA - YUP/KUP fares on AA - or a quick BKK-HKG in J on Royal Jordanian might actually but gold within your reach....... when combined with the 400 or so SCs the RTW should net you. The other option is to upgrade one of the RTW segments to Y+/WT+ which gives you full economy SCs

Not that I'm trying to sell lounge access :D

Happy wandering

There's been a lot of recent discussion on the benefits (or not) of QF PS status in this thread.

wandering_fred is right on skipping luggage charges in the USA, plus when flying AA in the US it will allow you to skip the queues in security and use their priority line, thanks to PriorityAAccess privileges extended to those with OW status (just ensure that PriorityAAccess is printed on your boarding pass).

Silver benefits are summed up on the QF website, and further information on OW benefits extended to Ruby's and other tiers can be found here.

On the basis of J class check-in it is well worth it.

Do you homework and in 5-10 years you could be lifetime Silver!!!

SPRUCE :p:p

Thanks for the replies thus far.

I did look at that "on the cusp..." thread, but he seemed to have qantas club or some other benefit already (I'm a little lost with some of the acronyms).

I have checked out the QF and OW benefit sites. I only linked to the OW one as I can't link to sites as a new member and didn't feel is was worth spacing out a heap of links that couldn't be easily followed.

I will be heading straight to Europe, so a status run on american airlines is out of the questions. I should be pretty close to silver (within 50SC) without any runs, but means I have to fly qantas ADL-CHC when the virgin flights have much better scheduling.

Apart from this RTW trip I doubt I will be flying qantas much in the next 12 months, and if I do it will have a jetstar segment too.

This list of acronyms and initialisms will help you decipher things.

Members of the QP have similar benefits to PS, except for those QP members who don't have status who only receive those benefits when flying QF/BA/AA.

While online checkin, where available, is perhaps starting to make it a little less relevant, I rate the priority checkin available with QF Silver/OW Ruby almost on a par with lounge access, given the length of some of the Y checkin lines I see about the place.

Apart from the priority check in and 10kg baggage - cant think of much else.
25% points QF.
Priority access through the rat race security screening in terminals of AA in the US.

If you are travelling to the USA then the third one is quite useful.

Hi All,

Reading through some of the replies...I am about to become PS.

If I am travelling international with 3 friends who are not QFF members, are they entitled to check in with me in the J check in counter? Or am I just allowed?

Cheers

Certainly if you are all on the one booking; other than that it's a case of YMMV. However it's generally OK.

Something else to bear in mind may be that additional luggage allowances do not apply to JQ flights.
