Hi Guys,
I'm a Krisflyer Gold member travelling business class an as such am eligible for 30kg + 20kg for being a gold member.
However due to the fact that I'm moving overseas, this still isn't enough for me - I'm going to be about 15kg over this. I figure due to accuracy of scales they'll allow a tolerance of ~5kg.
Worst case I'll just take the extra weight on board in my carry-on as I can take 2 bags of 7kg each. But would like to avoid this as it will be no fun lugging this stuff around the transit lounge in Singapore.
I definitely am not willing to pay an extra 40USD/kg for the privilege!

Wondering if anyone has had experience with Singapore Airlines and excess luggage?

Cheers

On the day they reopened LHR after the volcano thing a few years back 3 of us bought back 129kg of checked in baggage LHR to MEL. The plane had already been changed from 77W to 380 so it could carry extra passengers. We were travelling J and I don't think there was a spare seat to be had anywhere. The check in chick was hesitant and summoned the supervisor who did seem to bothered and waved it thru :). Last Christmas we only managed 115kg again in J for 3. So at the LHR end I've never had an issue. I must remember to ban Mrs UXB from John Lewis and the other commercial establishments in Oxford St ;). Never tried pushing the limits at this end though.

Cheers Danger UXB

They seem to be willing to be flexible for polite people.

One method I use is have flexible pieces. For instance, the bags that you are considering taking as 7 kgs in the cabin have them prepared to go in as checked baggage. The weight is going to go with the aircraft anyway, I explain. Then the bag can be checked in. If not successful then it is ready to carry to cabin.

Also, I have sometimes used the flexibility on the cabin bags that a laptop & bag do not count as part of the 7kgs. Nor does the clothes, jumper and bulky overcoat.

I've seen some people not taking their intended cabin bags to the check in counter. The theory is that they aren't challenged by the check-in agent. I can't vouche for that method on SQ. I did see it used on Easyjet and the cabin was a mess of oversized items.

I do think that there is a definite maximum per piece for WH&S reasons, so you want to be below that for each piece.

Happy travels.
