So strike permitting (of course this post could be a complete waste of space pending the result of Mondays vote) we are travelling HKG to LHR on BA26 on 24/3/10.
We are a party of 3- me Mrs Danger and Mini Danger (age 3 1/2). We will be sleeping most of the trip and hopefully Mini will clock up a good 10 hours if last year is anything to go by. So which seats?
Sould we take 3 of the 4 seats in the central block (ie D,E and F) or should we take 2 and 1 on the side (ie A,B and B in the row behind)
Mini Danger sleeps well but we don't want her to go walkabout without disturbing one of us so my thoughts were the 2 and 1 option on the side. From what I can see of the pictures A has to climb over B in the row behind to get to the isle. Is this correct? seems a very odd design to me but that's what it looks like on the pictures.
360 Degree Tour
Upper deck seems to be booked out but the lower deck is almost empty.
Your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated so I know what to ask for when we check in.
And do they seriously want $109.70 per seat to prebook the seat on the BA website!
Thanks in advance
Danger UXB

2 + 1 seats would be quite a good choice

the facing layout means that the window seat has to step over the aisle seat

If you want to pre-select seats in advance and not booked in J or C class, then there is indeed a GBP60 fee for pre-selection of seats.

Upper deck seating cannot be pre-selected with purchase

Exception : if holding OW Sapphire or OW Emerald status pre-selection is free and the (yucky imo) upper deck seats can be chosen

I would go centre section.

One person gets the aisle and one parent + child gets an enlarged space for two people - sort of like a child cage.

I'd take the window/aisle plus an aisle. The child cannot get out other than passing by the parent at the aisle which seems a pretty effective method to me without anyone getting stuck in a middle seat

If it was on an airline with 3 seats in the middle block then I would say that a middle block would be good, but not with 4 across

I'd go for the centre seats as well, but with the aisle seat a row behind.
E and F seats share the "child cage" simongr refers to, and have to climb over the legs of D from the row behind to get out.
So I'd take, say, 17E, 17F and 18D.
Seat-map for reference (though you might be on a 777 or the 70J 744): British Airways Boeing 747-400 (52/Next Generation Club World) - SeatExpert

Child cage sounds appealing. Just one question does the sliding barrier between a forward and rear facing pair of seats go down far enough to lift Mini thru if she was to stand on the seat ie in case of a call of nature can we lift her thru without the need to climb out the normal seat exit.
The seating plan on the "manage my booking" on BA comes up with the expanded 70 J 744 with the extra forward cabin of J seats in rows 12 to 14

Thanks for the advice, so far still deliberating over ther seating plans and coming up with a list of seats to ask for
Cheers Danger UXB

Hope your are not disrupted by the strike if it happens!
Looks like lifting is possible
Thanks for that

No worries.

I board at 5:30pm Feb 28, and by all accounts the strike can't start till March 1st. You never know, I may yet be on the last flight before the strike!

Have a great trip.

Whilst i have had no specific kid adventures a couple of comments.
 the dividing wall between between is plastic? and Miss Mini might be tempted to hop through, if she is a climber and wants to see mum or dad.
 Does she like window seats? short people seem to like like the view.
:idea:BA policy is to seat parental units with short people and allocate 3 days before. i.e. you will have priority on seating but i would guess unlikely to be seated upstairs especially on BA26. This flight seems more orientated to business travellers - my thought anyway. The A$100+ is pretty steep.
:) A comment from another thred was to dress Miss Mini in pretty clothes, distracts others and enhances the cute factor
:( How is Miss Mini on stairs (upstairs) and if she did escape during the flight would she know not to try and go down them. Had a lovely conversation about this with a Mr 4-5 yr old once.

have a great flight. Good sleeping

does the sliding barrier between a forward and rear facing pair of seats go down far enough to lift Mini thru if she was to stand on the seat

The divider goes down to about 3" from the bottom of the plastic bit. If the seat is reasonably upright though it's not projecting under the divider so I'd think having to lean through from your own seat it'd be hard to lift Mini D. through. If she's awake enough though she'd be able to clamber through herself with your help in steadying her.

In this situation I'd probably go for 20 D,E,F with Mini in E.

Cheers,
Steve.

Thanks for all the advice. This year I will post a trip report +/- photos, last years effort still hasn't made it to press yet!
Cheers again Danger UXB

Sorry to sidetrack this thread but I've also got a booking on BA (SYD-LHR-FCO return) in the not too distant future and your comment about the upper deck seats caught my eye.

I've only flown with BA a couple of times and always upstairs. I'd be interested to hear about the pros and cons of the lower deck cabin.

Regards
David.

I have switched from UD to LD now on most flights.

The benefits of LD that I see are:

- faster off the aircraft
- don't need to lug excessive hand luggage upstairs
- possibility of less full seating and thus more chance of a free seat next to me

HOWEVER - on BA I am still inclined towards the UD as I can get an emergency exit window seat meaning that I get the window but no-one is climbing over me.
