Hi

I need to decide if I should do the sunrise or the sunset tour to Uluru as Im time dependent. I believe tours take you to the southern side for sunrise and to the western side near park entrance for sunset. Which area ( sunrise / sunset is the area from which the photos / pics on postcards etc that are more commonly shown in magazines and brochures ? The southern sunrise side or the western sunset side that appears in postcards etc?

Thanks

We just ventured out of our main Accom area at Uluru for sunrise and sunset.

Will you have time to visit the rock during the day as well? We did not do a sunrise viewing but we did drive out for sunset. It was excellent but to walk around the base of the rock is magical and is something that I will remember more that the long distance views for sunset/sunrise.

Our visit was part of a small bus group so we ended up in the bus allocated areas. I thought we got great views. I believe the sunrise was at one of the platforms at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku. . First 2 photos are our sunset, last 2 were sunrise- were were there during a full moon and that impacted the sky watching while we were there. This article has a bit of a description

The iconic shots are from thee sunset side. The below were taken on the sunset tour. I highly recommend a tripod (or resting camera on a fence post) and takinga shot every minute to see the colour change.

Sunrise viewing point, the shape is different and the viewpoint is closer making it harder to get the whole rock in shot). The shots I took of the full moon setting over the rock before sunrise were shaky as didn't have a fence post hardy and my hand was shaking.

View from the resort (there is a platform across the road, walking distance from Dessert Gardens)

Do have to do it as a tour? Can you hire a car/drive yourself?

We found after immediate "dawn", all the buses were gone and the sun was still coming up and we had the entire platform to about 8 people in total - and silence. Before that, it was a zoo of humanity, cameras and people talking.

Having done both Sunrise/sunset at Uluru and also at Kata Kjuta I would have to say my preference was actually the latter. Perhaps less iconic though.

I would always recommend both sunset and sunrise at Uluru and at least sunset at Kata Kjuta (Olgas); as well as a day time base walk at both. Its why you need a couple of full days at the resort. Also to head out to Kings Canyon.
