Hi All,

Australia's number 1 frequent flyer according to ACA is Mel Gottlieb. Mel is apparently Qantas's number 1 frequent flyer with approximately 500hrs in the air per year.

Mel claims he had about 6million points at one stage.

Mel Gottlieb’s Frequent Flyer tips:

BOOK AHEAD OR AT THE LAST MINUTE Mel says book a few months ahead OR at the last minute. This should guarantee you a chance at one of those prized seats.

ALLOCATE MORE POINTS FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS Allocate your points to international flights — it's not worth spending points on competitive domestic flights.

USE YOUR CARD WISELY Be smart and always credit your points at the hotels and shops linked to your card.

BE LOYAL Mel says the number one tip - is 'be loyal'. “Loyalty pays these days, most people take the most convenient flight, but I'll actually spend sometimes a couple of hours at an airport waiting for a Qantas flight because I'm loyal to them.”

Christopher Zinn from Choice says we need to be realistic about how we use our points.

“Sports people who fly a lot internationally, business people who fly a lot internationally they rack up these things at a rate of knots,” Mr Zinn says.

“I'm sure a lot of people would prefer the discount because they're realising it's like a bucket full of holes it just doesn't hold any water, it runs out and it's not much use to you — you certainly need a little magic to insure you're going to get your flight.”

But if we don't have magic, we need an insider tip:

Christopher Zinn’s tips:

BOOK ON THE PHONE
“Going on the phone can actually get you access to frequent flyer seats that you can't find online.
USE THE BEST CARD FOR REWARDS
If you're looking for the best credit card to fund your flights for free, Money Magazine has ranked the top three in order:
1st: NAB Ant Amex

2nd NAB Gold Ant Amex

3rd WESTPAC Altitude Platinum

I don't believe he is #1 by volume of travel, points earned or anything like that, just that he has the FF number #00001 (or something like that).

Interesting points though, and yet another plug for AFF!

The trophy said: "Congratulations on achieving 7 million km with Qantas. Thank you for your continued support".

Whether that makes him "Number 1" is open for discussion.

I missed the best part of it because I was on the phone :(

That's a lot of flying per year. I'd be happy to assist Mel in using some of those points ;) :D

And he says he's averaged 500 hours for the last 30 years. (15,000 hours) So whilst it mightn't make him Qantas number 1 flyer in 2007, he's probably up there on a coughulative basis.

It's ACA remember.

Geez, I could barely get through the first line of guffal in the video.
"Frequent Flyer schemes can be a great way to fly for free".

Grr. No wonder no-one takes Fuel Fines seriously when guff like that is common practice!

Kind of reminds me of those ads... you know the ones... the product is dirt cheap, but postage and handling cost more than the product!

What a tip - surprised that book in the middle was not added to close off ALL of the options.

I could be wrong, but I would be surprised if he books his own flights at all..

Out of his tips, I actually thought most were ok. It's a pity they didn't find someone like Dave Noble or Admin to give a better view on how valuable QF points are :) and the fact that there is a much superior program for most uber (first, business or high cost economy ticket) frequent travellers called AA. What would anyone do with ~15000 sc/s per year anyway?

Really, you should look at around the 12 month mark, or close to when you travel, so he wasn't too far off really :)

I'm not sure that I learnt anything that I didn't already know from this ACA piece...in fact I disagree with a number of the tips given:confused:

lol, I agree... but we're probably both pretty informed FFers. ;) For the "general once a year traveller" the tips seemed to be okay, though I didn't really agree with the credit card references at the end. I wonder whether ACA might have been slipped some product placement money for the CC's.

I disagreed with most of the tips from the 'experts' (esp. the references to "free flights" ), but did see value in "Mel Gottlieb's" tips. They weren't exactly what I'd say but were still sound tips on how to earn and burn Qantas points.

Perhaps we could find out if QF have given him a CL membership for being such a frequent customer?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It is actually hard for me to be loyal to QF - they dont fly transatlantic, to Cyprus, domestically in the US, from Asia to the US ... the list goes on. Add to that older product on some routes, inferior IFE in places - staying loyal for 500 hours a year sound pretty rough...

Also loyalty is supposed to be a two-way thing. I think what they've done with the outrageous charges that now accompany award bookings is not showing very much loyalty back to the customer at all. But that's easily fixed, I'm finding it very liberating sharing my loyalty .. to NZ, DJ, SQ, ZL and not just QF.
