The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Well let's hope the 77% figure wanting to vaccinate is accurate and that a few incentives may get us over the 80% mark.
Today
I’m optimistic. If you remove the staunch anti-vaxxers and the proactive group out of the equation it boils down to the AZ-hesitants and the lazy. I think Pfizer may fix the former, the latter I don’t know. You almost need a Mr Whippy van going around surbubia so when they hear the music people can pop out get their vaccine and get a free ice cream 🍦to eat whilst they’re waiting 15 mins :D

Sticks for some people. Some (my husband included) won't get it until it starts impacting on their day to day life ..lockdown in qld hasn't impacted him.

Qld is now doing 2b with Pfizer on the Gold Coast but there will be a large portion of the population who don't see the need.

Until there are penalties for the anti vac brigade, we will not achieve anything.
All that 'they' can do is fine that anti vac dopes, but we know they just won't pay the fine, so means diddly squat.

You say not achieve anything?
I guess it's really a 80% or nothing isn't it.
70% brings some interim changes (maybe).

That's true return home for Xmas would be a huge bonus.
As we get nearer, I can imagine the holiday period flight cost?
Time to book reward flights etc is now.

Humans certainly do love round numbers.
Imagine they said 68% & 81% as part of the plan.....I can't, they wouldn't, ha!

Hopefully this is where competition might come into play... if they allow home quarantine the caps should be lifted as well... plenty of airlines and lots of seats if they are given the chance!

Over the last decade the flu vaccination has been as low as 30% and the high just above 70%.
However the effects of lockdowns and the highlighting of deaths should give more of a nudge.

Ok, so I (and the UK government) was a few weeks premature in claiming success but nevertheless the core part of my argument remains, that the Uk has shown (or will shortly show) that 80% of eligible is achievable.

You need to be more optimistic! Of course while I’m optimistic that it will happen I’m not as optimistic that it will happen in the timelines espoused by some. But once people eventually realise that this is what is needed the message will eventually sink in. I agree not everyone needs or wants to travel but they hate lockdowns and it has to eventually sink in that vaccination is a key part of the strategy to avoid them.
I know - that target will be reached (and exceeded) very soon in the UK :). I just get a bit ocd about facts sometimes…..

I am of course very positive that it will not only happen in Australia but will happen quickly.

Today we passed 12 million doses given.
So if the target population is 20 million then 80% is 16million.So 32 million doses needed. If we continue at 1 million doses a week we would get to 80% the week before Christmas.
I'm more optimistic than that ... those just now getting their first dose need to get their second by, at latest, end of October.

Plus those who have been jabbed since 2a in May.

Does anyone know why NT vaccinations done reduced quite a bit? So did ACT’s but that was because regional NSW residents vaccinated in Canberra were removed from our data, but I don’t know what would have caused NT

As Pfizer availability grows we should do much better than a million a week. We are already pushing towards 1.2 million a week. We haven’t really seen the impact of pharmacies either. Queensland and WA can push a lot higher. Maybe 1.5 million a week is realistic as supply increases which brings it back a fair bit. Sometime in November looks achievable to me.

EDIT

why not let my optimism rip and say early November :)

I get it that many people are angry/frustrated in this echo chamber about today's announced vaccination /freedom plan, but its important to note given the stats coming out of NSW - hospitalisation and ICU numbers across age demographics - show that everyone is vulnerable.

Yes and thankfully for a few weeks now, anyone over the age of 18 has been able to go to a GP and get a vaccine to protect themselves and their family (unless they are medically unsuitable which would be a tiny minority).

Vic Presser:

Pfizer doses in Vic at State Run Hubs will now move to the second dose being given at 6 weeks for the general public. This is so more people get some protection more a first dose.

High risk workers will remain at 3 weeks.

Existing second dose bookings remain as booked.

Just received this (was booked in for Belmont hub)

Pfizer vaccines are being redirected to assist in vaccinating Year 12 students in South Western and Western Sydney to help them return to face to face teaching.

This is to advise your vaccination appointment will need to be rescheduled.

We will initially cancel your current booking but will send you a priority booking code in the coming days to enable you to rebook at a later date.

You may also wish to contact the NSW Health Vaccination Clinics Booking Support Service on 1800 571 155 for further assistance including other options available.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

So essentially if my age group is not opened up for Pfizer within the next few weeks or so with same day bookings available getting fully vaccinated with Pfizer would happen at a later date than the full 12 weeks for AZ for me.

I suspect the GP clinics will be booked out with older age groups.

Looking more and more that I made the right call in every way to go with AZ.

Here's a simple one....you cannot cross any border (internal or external) if unvaxed. WA should love that one.
And you could take it a step further that if you are under 18 and ineligible for a vaccine you still can’t travel, at least when there are lockdowns.
