Australian (Open) Tennis and COVID-19

Be interesting if SA had an outbreak and Victoria decided to make us a red zone before the current lead AO players were able to exit. Not that by any stretch I want that to happen to SA people. Don't care about the players.

Options
A/ They just play the AO without them

or

B/ If the Adelaide AO Biosecurity Bubble is not breached by CV19 they could send a Vic crewed plane over to collect them.

If the Adelaide Bubble is breached then 14 day quarantine for those affected.

I really don’t know how anyone thought it was a good idea to bring a massive contingent of people into the country from every corner of the world when Australia is acting the way it is about the Coronavirus. The Australian response to the whole pandemic has been, to put it mildly, extreme. Who honestly thought this would not turn out exactly as it has?

It should simply have been let go for a year and given to another country that doesn’t have the fear of a single case that Australia does.

Victoria (and Australia as a whole) can’t have its cake and eat it. This goal of “zero” means our interaction with the rest of the world needs to be as close to “zero” as possible. An international tennis tournament is about as you can get from a reasonable risk given our country’s current position. We’ve got the largest city locked out from the rest of the country because of a small handful of cases, yet Andrew’s feels the tennis is acceptable. Absolute joke 🙄

Sure. No Williams sisters, Djokovic or Nadal. Plus a few others. That will work for the AO. Not.

I agree... AO will lose a lot of money if we play without them when they are still available, but the fact is this virus is killing so many people around the world, and Aussies struggling to return home, now we are bringing in 1,200 people (some already are infected) into the country?!

Option B as well. Remember that the Indian and Australian cricket teams are in bubbles and entered both NSW and Qld. So Dr Chant and Dr Young approved those arrangements.

Also it would depend on where the cases are, type of strain, whether they are unknown local transmission, and whether there are multiple unknown transmissions etc

For orange status it is only quarantine on arrival till a negative test is returned. If they had not of completed the original 14 day quarantine then that would be added.

PS. Let us hope that no one in the Adelaide AO Bubble orders a pizza to be delivered in ;)

From ABC News:

Low level breaches among players being reported

Ms Cassar said there were some players who were "testing our procedures" and had tried to leave their hotel room.

She said people trying to leave their rooms was putting the community and their staff at risk.

Ms Cassar said there was “zero tolerance” for the “challenging behaviours” and CQV had contacted Victoria Police to step up compliance.

Those players “persistently breaching” the rules would be transferred to a complex health hotel where a Victoria Police officer would be stationed at every door, Ms Cassar said.
I would have thought those persistently breaching rules should be sent home and forfeit their prize money. Simple as that.

There is the option for that and it was evidently in the six page letter.

But it is probably a bit early for people to have had persistent such behaviours.

The examples given were of people just doing things without much thought. Probably not surprising as most of them quite possibly have not been subject to a strict quarantine before and that here in Australia that quarantine actually means quarantine.

You would imagine that they have been reminded of what is not acceptable on such a transgression and the consequences of a repeat similar action.

PS. I wonder how John McEnroe would have handled quarantine? ;)

The penalties of $20k not much of a deterrent to those earning millions a year, pocket change for them really.

A fair proportion of players wouldn’t be earning anywhere near that and are doing it on a shoe string budget. You would think that it would be a massive deterrent to those. As you said the the elite it’s just pocket change

Plus with the surveillance for the AO quarantine in Vic it clearly is not just an honesty system, and I doubt that they are relying on fines as a key defence. They are being closely monitored, and I strongly suspect even more so than normal HQ. Repeat offenders will be sent to more secure quarantine.

And you will probably have the paparazzi staking out all the HQ venues as an extra line of defence, and moreso for the elite players ;)

And many Victorians and Australians actually, would be rightly furious that they were permitted to enter Victoria from a red hot zone with all their advertising in the interstate media about how such people were not allowed to enter. Still, I don't want that to be tested but a day long Pizza scare might be worth it.

Well in that case can we conclude that these tennis players are IQ challenged if they are not able to understand the simple instruction you must remain in your room and keep the door closed unless answering it to authorities? It's a simple enough instruction, when going into quarantine you are told the rules verbally and in writing. None of us who were doing quarantine were used to doing strict quarantine yet most of us managed to comply. These players seem to be willfully pushing the envelope because they are used to getting away with such behaviour because of their status as sports players. When Australians have broken out of quarantine or broken the rules the public have been happy enough for their fellow citizens to face the wrath of the law. These players need to be told there will be no warning and no fine. They will be on the next plane home.

I guess it's allowed as they have balconies in SA but a lead story is about Djokovic going on to the balcony to talk to a fan today. Of course at a distance and not on the same level. He will continue to push the line as he has always done.

Djokovic has shown with his previous douche bro behaviour with the Adriatic Tour and his wife posting the 5G conspiracy theories about CV why they think they are so special and know everything. My understanding is if you have a balcony in quarantine you are are allowed to use it. However there was an issue at my husband's quarantine hotel when people were trying to jump from balcony to balcony at elevated levels. There is a reason they limit amount of alcohol allowed.

My wife walks past the Peppers hotel in Adelaide every day and people are regularly out on the balcony talking to people and waving just for a bit of contact which is fine but in the early days some were discarding cigarette butts and spitting on to the footpath below. I believe they got read the riot act and threatened to be moved to a room with non opening windows if they were caught

I suddenly remembered I needed something from the shop so I had to walk past Rafa's hotel again, and this time I saw Venus being taken to training.

No professional cameras atm but Mix102.3 opposite had big ladders up, which they told me is because they are putting up a banner but they wouldn't tell me what it will say.

There seem to be a lot of locals suddenly finding important reasons why they need to walk down Tynte St today 😂

Including the author it seems! 😂

I didn't say it was new. Just that it was one of the many measures now used.

You do have some interesting ideas on how to run HQ. I doubt VicDHHS shares them.

Roger Federer's absence from next month's Australian Open is less down to injury and more due to strict quarantine measures for him and his family.

In a surprisingly frank interview Andre Sa, the tournament's Director of Player Relations, stated that Federer's wife Mirka did not approve the idea of him being away from his family for more than a month.

I didn't say he was there, but rather, as you quoted (my added bolding, just to make it obvious):

I think for someone like Federer, the AO and Victorian government would bend over backwards should the elite players have asked for something like that.

Interesting ideas. LOL.

A prartice that has been the norm in NSW since July and that SA introduced when the Parafiled cluster hit. As far as Im aware of those taking regualr international arrivals only WA and Qld werent doing this alredy.

And Tasmania :) .- edit drron beat me to it
