Interesting times ahead with the Open-Skies agreement being inked last week:

*Restrictions of 5th freedom rights removed for Australian carriers, excluding Tokyo Airports.
*Service to/from Australia is now possible out of Tokyo Haneda between 2200 and 0600 hrs

Should be interesting to see how the locals handle the new 5th freedom rights.

I was a little surprised that no one had posted this news earlier. What exactly are the implications for us Aussies - would it be likely that Japan might become a stopover for QF, JQi or VA en route to Europe or North America?

Maybe on the way to HNL, but I don’t think anyone wants to fly that far North and then West, it would be like flying JQ to SIN just to turn around and fly on to HKG, like they do :p

It's not that far via Japan, especially to the East coast of the US, don't it one or twice or even four times on the one trip and the routing over Alaska makes for spectacular scenery.

I have been thinking of going to Chicago next year and breaking the trip up in Japan makes it a much more pleasant prospect - especially as JL J is about $3000 cheaper than QF (and still yields SCs). If QF flew that route they might be tempted to compete - although I suspect JQi would be the more likely scenario.

The most likely scenario I see is that JQi establishes a hub in KIX, which may or may not be in conjunction with the new local offshot that they are doing. At which point, I'm not sure if there is still a need for the direct AU to NRT service, as that can now be done via KIX (or, as quite a few tourists like to do, hop on the bullet train instead). They could also consider a connection to CTS, which would do quite well as a leisure route in some seasons. (ok... I admit I'm probably in some dreamland...)

I would fly JL to Europe - it actually results in more even flying time on each flight - 10 hours to Tokyo, then 12 to Europe (they fly over the top). Particularly if going to northern Europe at all. They just need to make sure the connections work.

I also flew JL to SFO last year via Tokyo in J. Was good to have a stopover (I love Japan) and was very good for the SC balance!

Open skies agreement between Japan and Australia

Japan and Australia recently signed an open skies agreement that will be enforced from early 2013. What will this do for Qantas? Will there be more cooperation between Qantas frequent flyer program and JAL? On the hand, would Virgin Australia choose a partner in Japan (i.e. ANA) and create further threat for Qantas. I don't think Virgin Australia has created much program for Qantas in its Asia operation at this stage.

Have done SYD-LAX via Tokyo with JAL actually not a bad option, a nice stop over with a good quality hotel at the airport and on the return a same day connection (about 6 hours), a free upgrade from Y to J..

QF Mainline drops NRT for HND. JQ flies out of KIX and NRT. Potential new route SYD - KIX - SFO?

I'd be absolutely delighted to be able to fly into Haneda, rather than having to trek back and forth to Narita.

Although, given the restrictions, any HND bound flights would have to leave AU around noon, and leave HND at OMG o'clock.
