All, any recomendations on airport or nearby hotels in Auckland, for the dredded early morning flight.

Reviews on Trip Advisor are scary to say the least, with the police being called to one place and arresting the manager for beating an employee unconscious in front of guests.

Reading TA reviews for this locale is not for the faint hearted.

Ta,

Matt
PS, if you guys tell me to stay elsewhere, I'll be doing just that.

I've stayed at Comfort Inn Silver Point a couple of times and it is adequate, not great, though a number of people here have recommended Ventura (Inn, I think it is)...I'll be trying that one next time I need an overnight near AKL - though it sounds like it's the best of an average bunch.

From CI SP it is a 5 to 10 minute walk to a small shopping centre with a couple of restaurants, including a decent Indian one.

Both the above hotels have a free shuttle service.

Which hotel had the punchy manager?

One who has used the Ventura.Very comfortable room with a reasonable breakfast thrown in.In an industrial area so only views of warehouses and factories.Would use it again if needed. They also had a free shuttle which came and picked us up after midnight.

+1 on Ventura Inn. I used it twice for overnight stays. The room is actually quite comfortable, and the breakfast, whilst only continental, is adequate. I am planning to use again in my trip to Tahiti this Xmas.

Extract from Trip Advisor for the International or something similar. TA has 18 places reviewed, 75% are similar to this. Think I'll just stick to a better area and accept getting up 10 mins earlier. If you have half an hour they are worth reading, one place had cut down drink bottles for lamp shades! I thought this sort of stuff had long gone in NZ, but obviously not.

"We arrived at the hotel to find no one around - we rang the reception bell but no one came, after a few minutes we tuned into the noise we could here and it was infact a women screaming for help! We fled outside and called 111, we waited by the road ready to leave while I spoke to the police, the eagle Helicopter appeared overhead and about 5 minutes later the Manager/Owner dragged a women from the hotel, he was beating her with full force and she was lifeless. My father and I managed to get the man to let her go and she collapsed to the ground - she was blue from lack of oxygen and her beating. After sometime the police arrived, it turns out the women was a staff member! We explained to the police that we would not be staying there and they escorted me inside to tell the manager and ensure our credit card would not be charged. He became very abusive towards me saying that I was trespassing etc, I had words with him and told him exactly what I thought of him. He was charged by the Police and we left. He infact did charge our credit card and we are still trying to get our money back. We never normally stay in these cheap motels - it was just going to be handy for our needs that night but never again - we ended up having a wonderful stay at Skycity. From what I saw of the reception area it was filthy and stunk. I wish we had read these reviews before booking. I would love to see this place closed down. he is a horrible guy and I would highly recommend staying away for your own saftey."

I have stayed at the Ventura several times and recommend it. There is a good pub (The Toby Jug Inn) 2-3 minutes walk away and a Pizza shop next to the pub. The free schuttle runs from the hotel every 30 min on the hour and half hour. It has a courtesy phone from the Domestic terminal but I'm not sure about the International.

The Indian/Chinese that tuapekastar mentioned is quite good but the accom around it is not quite as good.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Courtesy phone at international which we used.

I stayed at the Centra Auckland Airport. Great for a night. Just refurbished (its owned by IHG and is apparently going to rebrand as a Holiday Inn but that was back in November so they are taking their time there) fantastic rooms for a 1 night.

Shuttle provided but its $5NZD each way :(
