I'm about to embark on my next tour of Asia and will be making use of my hard earned frequent flyer points to book intra Asia awards on cx. the majority of these journeys will originate in Thailand or china.

problem is, while awards can be booked on line, you are required to present yourself (with credit card) at the qantas Bangkok or shanghai office in order to complete the booking process. tickets will not be issued unless you visit the office for credit card verification.

I book my awards in advance, usually from outside the country, and require tickets as evidence of return travel for border formalities (even at checkin in certain cases).

previously qantas has indicated that local regulations require them to take this step. we have already established however that this is not the truth, and it is because qantas uses local sales agents who do not have the correct facilities or arrangements for credit card processing.

we know it is not 'due to local regulations' because I can book travel on Cathay, British airways, American Airlines (you name it... even Sri Lankan airlines) without needing to have my credit card verified before a ticket is issued.

so i feel this squarely lies with qantas, and whatever booking system/arrangements they have in place.

the workaround is to use the australian call centre who will make the booking for you over the phone, and charge you in australian dollars. however... this attracts the call centre assisted booking fee.

as this has now been going on for several years, could you please raise with the relevant department that the assisted booking fee is WAIVED for bookings that need to be completed ex bkk and ex china where the frequent flyer does not have an address nor is domiciled in those countries.

since it seems that credit card fraud may be an issue, might I suggest it is also passed on to the relevant department that appropriate controls are easily put in place. where an established frequent flyer, especially those with status, are using points for their own travel, from their own account, and paying with an australian credit card with a billing address that matches their frequent flyer account, what is the risk of fraud?

finally, if it is a fraud issue, qf could put arrangements in place for the credit card to be presented at checkin (as is the case in hkg).

in summary could I please have an explanation of why award bookings ex bkk and china require credit card verification before a ticket can be issued (and the important bit it this... when no other airline requires it)? and secondly can qantas please organise for a fee waiver for passengers caught up in these arrangements through no fault of their own?

this has been going on for many years, and has cost me in the hundreds of dollars in assisted booking fees.

with thanks

Agree totally! Every other airline I book online with is more than happy to have my CC sighted when I check in, if they require verification. (Almost got caught out once on CX when the wife of my colleague used her CC to book our flights - thankfully she was with us here in BKK, so no harm, but she never did it again!)

Add to this the stress factor, when you need to book an unexpected journey whilst in another country, returning on a Friday after 5pm/Saturday/Sunday and need to fly out again on the Monday - absolutely ridiculous! They open at 8am and shut at 5pm here in BKK (Monday to Friday) - and getting to the office and back can often be whole day affair.

Last time I checked, we were in the 21stC, not the 19thC - get with the program QF and implement CC verification as an alternative at the airport.

It is also the same for normal bookings with QF out of BKK as well.

You can also book and pay for JETSTAR flights out of BKK over the internet without having to present at the QF office in BKK.

A mate of mine got caught up in a similar conundrum a few years back. He's Aussie, wife's Thai and she flew home (one way) to visit a sick relative. Stays a while, and he organises points+pay for her to fly home, and pays on his visa card (from Oz) after being reassured by cs things will be fine when she goes to get the tix.
When it comes time for her to collect the tickets, even though he's in Australia - everyone panics, looks like she's stuck there.. He speaks to customer service down here and they say it's all sorted - then wife calls him back saying it's not.

A lot of to-ing and fro-ing, fortune spent on international calls and fees but she made it home (Oz) eventually.

He wrote to Qantas but doesn't look like they've sorted it all out.

I was at the Bangkok office about three weeks ago for credit card verification. I suggested to the agent that it was a PITA to need to present and then she told me that in some time in mid 2013 she expects that there will no longer be a requirement to present. From what she told me it appeared that there were concerns of card fraud and thus the need to present. I made some small chat where I said something along the lines 'what will happen to you?' as in your job/agency once no one needed to present. She said its Ok because they were a travel agent anyway, and their business was more than just for card verification for QF. Anyway as we know front line staff often do or do not know the truth so this may be just pure speculation on the agent's behalf but for now, to me, its some hope things might change down the track.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Likewise for Jakarta... It's such a pain.

Funny thing, is if I book an AAdvantage Award on the QF flight, I don't need to present any credit card.

Is the agent still Tour East? They are (were) 37% owned by Qantas, and do a range of things. IIRC supplying cabin crew to Jetstar was one of their things.

I agree it's time this got fixed. MasterCard and Visa now have SecureCode/Verified by Visa which should be enough.

I did manage to get around the system once. I went to a Qantas ticket counter in Australia, when I was at the airport anyway and they authorised the credit card - or sent a message to BKK that it was authorised. Anyway, it worked for me.

It also causes hassles if you need to change your return dates - I had this happen to me mid-year. Changed the return date online - no problems, but I then had a call from Tour East requesting me to front up at the office with my CC. Explained that would be difficult, as I was already in AU.

The lady said that was ok, she would alert QF in AU that I would be calling to verify. All well and good, until they wanted to slug me $80 for a "phone assisted" booking (on top of the $100 fee change). Was sorted eventually, but really? I did everything online to avoid extra charges for phone assistance - is it my fault some antiquated system is still in place and I truly cannot physically get to their BKK office to show my card??

What a great surprise for visitors when they decide to extend their holiday because they're enjoying themselves - truly outrageous QF!

On my most recent purchase of a JASA from Jakarta I was now able to pay by AMEX without needing to go to the ticketing office. For Visa or Mastercard it would have still required fronting up in person though.

I had virtually the same conversation there about two years ago and received a similar vague assurance that it would be resolved within six months.

Me too - June 26th 2012; "End of year, QFF not need to come to office." Yup, I honestly think they really don't know, and by saying this (or variations) customers feel better and don't start ranting at them, thinking it's going to be resolved soon.

Until next time. . . . . :D

As this post is now a few weeks old and has dropped off the front page I have PMed Red Roo to bring it to his attention.

Same problem ex Manila. I'd love to use Qantas to fly friends here, but the credit card verification in person in Manila makes it too difficult, so I'll use Air Asia instead. Hope QANTAS can sort this out soon....

Isn't this Thai law? Book on TG, PG or another carrier and you will be told that you MUST present the card for verification. In the TG and PG case, they just ask for the card at check in, rather than in the office.

Whenever I have booked ex BKK in the past, either award or cash, I have simply called the Premium Desk who removed the requirement instantly.

.

It is not a requirement when booking Jetstar, CX, Air Asia, or a multitude of other carriers ex BKK.

I also use the premium line these days but IME they don't 'remove the requirement' as such, but convert the price to AUD and treat it as an Australian transacation.

But I can book PG and have online and only required to show the CC at checkin-way different to QF.And not a problem.
