Hi AFF,

Planning to head to HKG in mid June then flying HKG-PEK on 1 July, and then returning PEK-HKG on Dec 21 or 22, to then return to MEL on Dec 22 or 23. QF website won't let me book HKG-PEK as part of the multi-city engine so I was wondering if peopole had any general advice on whether I should fly CX or KA for this leg. Does anybody have any opinion on which is better? In particular, on the return leg, I'm looking at either CX391 departing PEK at 1330 on the 777-200 or the CX/KA codeshare departing at 1230 (CX6873) on the A330-300.

If I fly KA but don't book through the CX website (i.e. use KA website or elsewhere), do I still earn QFF SC/points? If so how much (CX booking page is booking into Y)? CX website is giving me HKD$5,900 (c. A$830) for all options. I will also try the KA website direct and expedia, etc - any other suggestions?

JAL possibilities

Does anybody know if it is possible to book MEL-SYD-Tokyo-HKG on JAL, or HKG-Tokyo-PEK? I had a look at the JAL website and it seems really clunky, doesn't seem to like those sort of multi-city bookings. Thought this might be another option to rack up SC.

Flying in J?

How much do people think a HKG-PEK ticket in J is worth? I've found a KA flight with CX flight numbers for A$1,385.

Why not use a travel agent ? ... GDS can be used to book any sequence of flights using single or multi carrier, through or constucted fares ??

Give QF a call rather than use their online booking. A couple of years ago I did SYD-HKG-PVG (so not quite PEK true) and I couldn't book the set of flights I wanted via the QF website (it wouldn't let me). I gave the QF office a call and they could book the flights for me at a reasonable price. Because it couldn't be booked via their website from memory they also waived the call center booking fee.

This was specifically because I wanted to fly CX and not KA...

As for JA, I've done battle with their website a few times, but if there was an award for worlds worst airline web site, they would win it hands down... So you may very well be able to do SYD-NRT-HKG, but it would be a much longer flight than a simple SYD-HKG, and it would be pretty difficult to book that combination on the JAL website as the English (Australian) version seems to want you to start in an AU city, and end up in a Japanese city, so HKG-NRT-PEK would be right out without navigating the Japanese version of the website.

It seems today the QF multi-city engine is letting me book this.

Interesting that there is a sale fare MEL-HKG return for $1,083, but that I can get MEL-HKG-PEK-HKG-SYD-MEL (to use the A380 on the way back) for just $1,168 - valuing the HKG-PEK fare at less than $100!

So in terms of SC earn that looks like 30 + 20 + 20 + 30 + 10 = 110. I'll only be PS when I take these flights so if I don't make 250 to requalify I suppose I don't lose all that much.

Just curious that the QFF Earning Points Calculator says MEL-HKG-SYD-MEL will earn 10,177 points in Bronze yet the multi-city itinerary when I go to the final booking page says the same thing despite also including the HKG-PEK legs on KA and CX. Is it possible QF is giving me some sort of KA/CX Discount Economy fare that earns no QFF points or SCs?

HKG-TPE availability often good on QF classic awards (low taxes too boot).
My only CX first experience

Just noticed that. Is it possible to do a JASA? It doesn't seem to work on the website.

any general advice on whether I should fly CX or KA for this leg
Personally I prefer KA and the smallest jets possible on HKG to China sectors due to the unavoidable 'ATC Traffic Flow Control' delays.

Yes - depends on the fare class though as some classes are non-earning/50% earning:

Nowhere near that much - this is what one would call the "CX/KA premium" - probably double what other carriers on the route are charging...look at the CX ex-TPE option, you should still be able to fly on KA with the I-class Business Fares.

Not too much if you do a QF ASA ex AUs to TPE, and then there is the 2k j return to Australia with CX ex TPE ;)

Never seem JASAs on Code-Shares! Are there any other instances or just BR where this occurs?

<EDIT> interesting, never bothered looking at JASAs other than for SC runs :) lots of CZ, MU, KA, CX etc into China ex AU - nothing particularly good value though
