Sorry not specific to this thread but does any know the baggage rules for a mixed airline RTW in economy class and on one ticket ?
My friends first flight is QF to LA where an allowance of 2 x 23kg is given but then on Lufthansa it’s 1x 23kg and then on Thai from Bangkok to Melbourne it’s 2 x 23kg….I thought that the baggage allowance for the longest sector is the allowance for all sectors
Many thanks for any help and advice

This suggests that it’s a minimum of 1x 23kg.

You may do better with specific airline rules (eg QF and their pieces v kg to the US) plus any airline/alliance status perks.

The first leg is QF with 2 x23kg….a stop in LAX before continuing on to Frankfurt and that’s where the problem lies in that Lufthansa are asking for $100USD for the 2 bag that was included in the first flight

Stopover in LAX or transit? If the later, then QF should check through and bypass the extra baggage fee(?) but I guess you still come up against these limits for the remainder of the itinary?

This is one of the issues for anyone travelling in whY without status - that should be factored into going for the non-premium fares (Y+ and up).

Unfortunately it’s a stop and no status….so the rule of the longest sector doesn’t apply ?

Did you check the baggage allowance with your travel agent of Lufthansa? It is clearly printed on Lufthansa Etickets. The Most Significant Carrier would apply for baggage allowance, and any Status with QFF, which may apply to Qantas flights, will not apply on any Star Alliance airlines. That said, if you were travelling to/from Australia via the USA then a piece concept would apply, and started with Qantas,
"If you've purchased international and domestic flights and these are on the same ticket, the international checked baggage allowance applies to the domestic flights too. Where the international and domestic flights are on separate tickets, if the connection time is within the same calendar day* the international checked baggage allowance is accepted on both flights. Be sure to present both tickets when checking your baggage in." 9 time out of 10 I have found Qantas checkin staff at Sydney Domestic Business checkin counters are not aware of the rules as stated on Qantas website, and this results in unneccessary stress and neccessity to argue for your entitlement, for the passenger. Your Qantas flights must be on the Lufthansa or Swiss issued ticket for the baggage allowance of Qantas to apply for the entire journey
"

Special baggage rules for travel to/from or across the USA

Under a consumer protection law issued by the US Department of Transportation, the following baggage rules apply to flights to/from or across the USA:
  • Consistent baggage rules apply to all parts of a journey to/from or across the USA. These include the free baggage allowance, the dimensions and weight of each of your bags, the level of any charges that may be incurred and hand luggage regulations.
  • The baggage rules set by the airline which is listed first on the ticket are those that usually apply here. If Lufthansa is listed on the first flight segment of your ticket, then Lufthansa’s baggage regulations will apply to your entire journey* — both your outbound and your return flight.
  • However, any airline which is listed as the first carrier on the ticket is at liberty to transfer the baggage rule stipulation to another airline in the itinerary (the so-called ‘Most Significant Carrier’). In such a case that other airline’s rules would then apply to the entire journey.
  • Lufthansa therefore cannot guarantee that, for a Lufthansa-issued ticket, the Lufthansa baggage rules will always apply in every case. Other airlines often have baggage rules which differ from those of Lufthansa.
For details of the free baggage allowance applying to your individual flight, please see your ticket and the e-mail confirmation which you receive from Lufthansa.

*Hand luggage rules may vary due to local laws."

So I find in Business , flying back to Australia via the USA my baggage allowance is up to 4 Bags @ 32 KG on Star Alliance flights as a Lufthansa Senator/United 1K, and that drops down to 3 x 32 kg on the Qantas flights including domestic feeders and any intercontinental Qantas/Oneworld flight . In Economy, your baggage allowance should be according to the FIRST flight on your ticket, understanding Lufhansa and other Star Alliance airlines will not recognize any additional QFF baggage status. It is a diffuclut fare to navigate, but as you can be creative with baggage flying at least one way via the USA, this allowance applies to the ENTIRE ticket.

How long is the stopover at LAX? It might be hard to argue MSC rule if it's more than 24 hours and different day than when you arrive into LAX.

Stop over is 7 days and I’d like to think we’ve got a good argument but in the whole scheme of things I think my friend should just pay for the extra case and think that the RTW ticket just cost a bit more 😰

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but it seems like the airlines baggage policy should be based on the most significant carrier in the sectors in your "trip" with each trip being one or more flights taken with at most a 23 hour 59 minute connection at each connection city. So for instance, if you were flying say Sydney to Frankfurt (via Los Angeles) on Qantas and Lufthansa with say an 11 hour layover in LAX, the most significant carrier would be Qantas and the baggage policy of them should apply for Lufthansa. However, if you are staying in LA for a week, then yeah technically that's a separate trip in your itinerary and would be subject to the most significant carrier rules from Los Angeles to wherever you are going.

One thing to remember with Lufthansa is they are a German airline, and as such are obligated to follow EU airline regulations including EU261. If your arrive at your final destination 4 hours late they're on the hook to provide you 600 Euro cash compensation.
