Commercial flights from Archerfield have been talked about for years.

Currently only a Saab 340 or smaller Dash 8 could fly to Sydney(not Mascot, but rather Bankstown) only on a charter basis, due to rules. Flight would take around same time as QF/VA/JQ/TT BNE/SYD at around 90 minutes give or take 5 minutes & would suit a lot of business people, who want to go to Sydney, but not CBD, but rather west out Parramatta way. Parramatta is now 5th biggest city in Australia, after BNE, SYD, MEL, PER & bigger than ADL.

At Archerfield like Bankstown, you could park free a very short distance from terminal, ie. 10-100m. From terminal to aircraft maybe 100m. No security reqd under 40 seats, so fast in & out. There are big rental car companies near both airports.

Thrifty at Bankstown & think it's Hertz near Archerfield (km away) & both would gladly put cars at terminals.

I expect that as soon as commercial flights started operated, the parking will no longer be free.

The parallel runway at Brisbane makes Archerfield arrivals and departures most unpalatable.

Those same business people would need to be based on the south side of Brisbane too (Archerfield isn't located near the motorway from the City). There are lots of industrial properties in the area, not sure if that would support the type of loads needed for a flight into Western Sydney.

r u kidding ? Archerfield is ab out 2kms by rd. from Ipswich rd & not far from SE freeway. Many business right on Archerfield doorstep & closer for at least 1/2 of Bris residents

Ipswich road is not a motorway - during peak hour you'd be subject to quite a lot of delays. I used to drive along Beaudesert road and Ipswich road to the city (and back) - Beauie was fine, but Ipswich road especially between annerley and the PA Hospital was pretty jammed.

"Not far from the SE freeway". If you're counting ~10km not far... You'd take longer to get to Archerfield via the M3 than taking Ipswich Road.

I live pretty much directly south of Archerfield. By distance it's probably closer than BNE. However, with the gateway motorway also available to me, it's about the same time to get to BNE (well... Once these blasted roadworks for logan enhancement finish)

if you're driving from western suburbs(no need to taxi/uber due to free parking) you don't go anywhere near Annerely/PA. You're trying to compare driving from northside to Archerfield. The market is mainly south & west & not hard to fill 34-36 seaters.

Sure... Agreed that it's more for those based in the south of Brisbane as per my original post. West I guess would be another catchment, as long as they are south of the river. Those on the other side of the river (kenmore etc) I suspect would still be faster to BNE due to limited crossings.

there's only a million or 2 people live closer to Archerfield than BNE, but the real saving is stress & time spent getting thru airports. For someone who lives same distance from either they might save 4 hours plus on a day trip to Sydney & zero stress

The thing is about these secondary airport scenarios, unless you can offer reasonable frequency, not really competitive with main airport. A couple of flights a day to Bankstown, for example, probably won't cut it in terms of time savings associated with a smaller/closer airport, as you are then constrained by the timing of those services.

6 flights a day would probably work initially, such as 3 in the am, departures at 0600, 0630 & 0700 & 3in pm 1700, 1730 & 1800
