I hold an ABTC but it has expiry on the card as 'August 2015'. I have just been asked to go to Beijing in July for a week. Previously I won't need a visa. I can't find out if there is a minimum valid duration of the ABTC for exemption of visa entry. My local chinese embassy said they do not know and referred me to an office in Beijing.

Does anyone have experience in similar situation?

Many thx. Just checking you mean before the ABTC expiry rather than visa (because I am trying not to get one). I am more worried if the airport immigration will let me enter. In fact my travel agent just told me CX needs to sight my card. I wonder if it is such a grey area that someone may decide not to let me through.

Is the APEC card endorsed with China on the back of the card which is "CHN"? As long as your APEC card is valid then there should be no issues whatsoever.

Are you perhaps confusing how long your passport should be valid for when entering another country?

Make sure you take a copy on your onward ticket back to Australia in case they want to see it at checkin or by authorities on arrival in China.
