First time poster (in ages) long time lurker

As we have extortionate school fees to pay , decided to add some value for ourselves and get a different credit card (currently have Commonwealth Bank)

Two options we are considering -
the St George option
St. George Bank Signature Visa $0 Annual Fee 1st Year with 80,000 Qantas Points ($4,000 Min Spend within 90 Days)

But today we got targeted with an ANZ - 120,000 bonus and $150 back

The ANZ one seems more attractive but does come with a fee, which what I can understand is $425 but you get $150 back so its $275
The 75 Bonus status credits that come with this card probably not going to make a whole difference to us as we only want it for the points so its unlikely that we would book 2 flights by the June 30 deadline. We will likely cancel the card after the first year and see what deal is available for next year! We have 4 years of over $30k fees coming up

We will probably just use the points towards an interstate flight (PER-SYD for example) or maybe upgrade points for work travel. The work travel isn't frequent and isn't always on Qantas, we haven't got lots of FF points with either QF or VA at the moment and our long haul trips are generally with QR, EK or CX depending on who is the best value, so they dont always come with points.

So experts out there, which would be the best option for us?

Thanks in advance!

6 year lurk, amazing!

I applied for St George yesterday with much reluctance. Relatively poor reviews vs other cards.

Agree with above. Apply for both, you and +1 apply for an ANZ each. 1) Travel one via pointhacks and 2) 120k QF ANZ black.

Considering you mix up travel across airlines, this gives you a mix of points to play with. Im assuming you don't have status with any airline?

this doesnt really add up.

convert the points to cash or gift cards to assist defray expenses rather than throw away on luxuries.
STG return on gift card redemtpions is actually not bad.

With the St George amplify where you get the 80k Qantas points based on your spend - obviously we are going to spend more than $4k over the year, can we then use the points we accrue for other things and also get the 80k points? So in other words the QF points are an additional bonus to the other rewards you might be entitled to?
