I need to cancel a QF Reward flight that was originally charged to an AMEX companion card (from ANZ). This card was cancelled by ANZ on 5 August with the recent RBA changes. Letters from ANZ state that "purchases or refunds' to the AMEX card will decline from 5 August.

I've contacted QANTAS and ANZ several times each. Qantas insists that the refund must be to the original card and that ANZ will be able to 'find' money and credit to me. ANZ insist that the money will be declined and returned to Qantas. ANZ have emailed me a letter (to provide to QANTAS) stating that Qantas needs to refund to different card.

Neither QANTAS or ANZ will budge. It's 540 Euro. Do I take a punt and cancel the booking and hope that I can sort out after refund is processed? Has anyone been in the same situation with QANTAS?

Cheers, Steven.

I've successfully done a test case where I've refunded to an ANZ amex after the 5th Aug cut date without any dramas. You will be fine to refund to the ANZ amex.

If it doesnt work out perhaps contact the ombudsman https://www.fos.org.au/
I wasnt getting anywhere with ANZ a few years back. Lodged a dispute and got a specific person dealing with my issue until resolution. I had to sign something in the end to say i was happy with the resolution so they could report back to them and say its all fixed.

Thanks SD. I'll press the cancel button and see how I go.

Just been through all of this and I hope you get the refund through ANZ, otherwise be prepared to sign a stat dec and jump through hoops.
Oh, and keep your eye on the refund - mine got lost by QF and a refund that should have taken 2 weeks, has taken 6.

Good luck!

Have done it before. Has to be to original card, even if cancelled. ANZ will have the funds.

yeah, have done it before -the bank just sends you a cheque or asks you where you want to deposit the money

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Qantas are right, ANZ are hopeless - have done exact same thing before

Normally the merchant/airline accepts the letter from the bank for a different card. I haven't heard of that being denied before.

Refunds to a credit card shoukd only take a few days. Refunds to BPay take much much longer.

Not quite the same situation, but when I had a Price Promise claim for a ticket that was originally booked on an ANZ card that I was about to cancel, QF advised that if you wanted to refund to a different card they'd require a statutory declaration. (As it turned out, I just held on to that card for a few more months before cancelling...)

Booking cancelled and refund received back to ANZ very promptly. I didn't have to call or chase, just showed online automatically.

Makes me wonder why ANZ protest so strongly when their computer systems must be able to redirect funds.

That's a great outcome. Refunds from Qantas - and definitely a Qantas issue - have been taking ages recently even when it's a simple cancellation.

Agree it seems weird.

I cancelled my ANZ FF Black (both Amex and Visa) and received a refund months later from expedia onto a separate ANZ low rate card I hold.. without any discussion from me... very easy

For information, the NAB accepts refunds back to closed credit cards but you have to call and get them to move the money manually to another account.

QF is always the road block in getting the cash however....

I managed to get Qantas to refund to a different credit card account (i.e. not ANZ) when I was due a refund on a ticket paid for with my ANZ black (now cancelled). It took quite some doing and a stat dec but it shows it is technically possible.

In my experience you will be fine... We where OS on Holidays and my CC got compromised so we cancelled it and used another CC but we had already paid deposits and also was awaiting refunds on hotels and hire cars and they all went thru and turned up in the CC account number.
