Hi All,

I am planning on buying new luggage, however have been reading on the Airline's websites that we are travelling with (V Australia and QANTAS) that your total dimension of your luggage must not exceed 158cm.

The luggage I am looking to purchase is either Antler Liquis Large (83x54x34 = 171cm) or the Samsonite Cosmolite Large (85x59x30 = 174cm), however, both of these are over the Airline's 158cm limit.

Surely they wouldn't make luggage this large if most international airlines won't accept a linear dimension of over 158?

So to cut a long story short - do airlines really check the linear dimension of the luggage??

Have you successfully flown with one of the abovementioned bags?

Thanks in advance!

You are talking about checked in baggage, it should be noted. And no, I doubt there's a methodical way of checking other than the cursory glance of the checking in agent. Unlike carry on bags which have the dimension checking frame at most gates.

As to why they manufacture bags that size, well, in other parts of the world people on travel on trains regularly too, where the baggage restrictions are much looser.

I've travelled on QF - and AA - with the large Antler Liquis, no problem. No-one measures the bag, they just weigh it!

(I wasn't even aware it exceeds the max dimensions.)

Welcome to AFF :p

I travel with a Samsonite Cosmolite Large on long haul and haven't had any issues. Apart from getting it down the aisles of DB trains

If it that big are you going to be able to keep under the weight restrictions?

Thank you for the helpful replies everyone.

simongr - That's the thing, the luggage isn't actually that big, but I have only now just read on many Airline's websites that checked bags need to be no larger than 158cm in linear dimension!

Be careful domestically on QF. The automated NGCI bag-drop chutes scan the bags in all direcitons, and I believe that they do, in effect measure the bags. No idea what is done with the measurements, but it does make sense to have something preventing oversized items being sent down the automated chute.

Never had a problem with any Euro carrier with the size of my carry on (which is larger than the industry standard), DJ are only one's who give me a problem (and usually the regional airports)...I ended up also buying the smaller size so I don't run into any problems
