Was dreading the RNO > DFW > BOS flight on AA today as it left at 12:53am and never like those 3 and a bit hour flights after midnight, the rest of the day is usually a write-off.

Flying J and in 3A, (which is where we seemed to get dumped) noticed the PAX next to me was in wrap-around dark glasses and hunting cap, but quiet. Plane was delayed an hour, but got to sleep on take-off. Suddenly woke when he was squeezing my leg! I put it down to an accident, but fell asleep and about 15 minutes later he was doing the same thing. i told him to stop it, but then realised he was most likely drunk via the smell. Dropped off again and then awoken when we had my hold of my ear and would not let go!!!! It almost came to blows trying to push him away. Called the staff, but he just sat there, would not speak and pretended to be asleep. They just gave up.
But then with me awake as I was excepting a flying punch or something, he reached back between the seat gap and grabbed the leg of 4A telling him he looked like his wife! 4A started to become abusive and the staff came telling HIM to be quite. We explained the problem but at that point we hit top of decent and the pilots address. Rest of the flight he just sat there with his glasses on and not a movement.
As we were an hour late and I had to get across from C30 to A18 and I just wanted to get off that plane! Happened to miss the connecting flight so was able to talk to the staff in the Admirals Club. Upshot is they cannot do much, even if i fill out a report.

After over 2,000 flights I've never had anything like this before or anything near it; has anybody else had a similar experience? A nightmare Sunday in the States, but I'm glad it wasn't a woman sitting next to him.

Haven't had it happen to me but did see something similar happen. UA: The crew moved the passenger affected and told the bloke in no uncertain terms if there was even a hit of movement from his seat without crew permission he would be restrained and the flight would divert.

Seemed to work.

had an experience ex Perth where I was sitting in the second emergency exit row on a 737. as the cabin staff concluded the briefing and checked with each of us if we were prepared to act if necessary, the guy in front of my said (literally) 'oh, I'm not to sure hey, I'm pretty cough**n pissed right now'.

all of us heard it and burst out laughing ... needless to say he was quickly moved to another seat and a more sober person filled the role.

I've also had a bloke out of Paraburdoo wake up mid flight, grab me on the arm, start to put his arm around me and tell me that he loved me. Seemed to me that his 'disco biscuits' had kicked in suddenly. Still to this day, I can't understand why anyone would bother taking pingers on a plane.

anyway, these still make me laugh.

I once made the mistake of choosing not to line-up for the toilets in Hobart airport, figuring I could hold on ‘til the ever-latening flight took off & just use the toilet in the air. Cow woman in front of me did the full recline ASAP after take-off, and I couldn’t get out & then back into my seat without jostling it due to lack of room ... leading to complaints to her angry-little-bogan partner who then stood-up & had a massive rant in front of the entire ‘plane.

Very VERY enbarrassing. I was too shocked to consider moving straight away (in fact I apparently started smiling - angry-little-bogan was actually pretty funny but I think it was more shock than amusement - which of course made him worse), fortunately they moved; although I was vaguely worried about whether he was going to want to punch-on when he got off the ‘plane.

This is a little unfair :( Someone wanting to recline is within their rights to do so. Jostling the seat in front shouldn't be necessary. The person between you and the aisle should be polite enough to stand up to allow you out, and you can support yourself using the armrests - or slide along.

I was in the aisle seat & it was domestic economy; you can’t get out of a domestic economy seat when the one in front is reclined, without touching the seat in front, if you’re over 11” tall ... it’s just not possible.

I'm 6'3 and it is entirely possible, especially in the aisle! The aisle armrest also usually lifts up (just use the button under the armrest to release it). If you can't use the release, you may have to lean back slightly to get out, grabbing the back of your *own* seat if necessary.

Leaning back on someone? I’m not going to let the evils of others force me to perform evil acts myself! :)

Most aisle seat armrests lift up to enable a slide out - there's a little button, lever or pin on the armrest (underneath) near the base.

I never new that, good info. Would be especially handy for my wife who has recently had Knee replacements. Now she can lift the arm rest, swivel around on her bum and stand straight up without having to do the half stand side ways shuffle.

Why cant the cabin crew tell you these things when they just stand there watching you in pain and struggling

Wow. I didn’t know this either. Agree eric2011 it should be made more widely known. I’m betting most people don’t know about it.

If found the aisle seat magic button only a few times - and it was wonderful when I did, changed aisle sitting forever.

EDH-LHR a few years ago, and I struck up a conversation with a US ex-pat, youngish guy, in the boarding line. Priority is called and I use it, saying goodbye and heading down the aerobridge. Lo and behold a while later, here he comes down the aisle and sits next to me, what are the odds? Anyway, the conversation picks up again and you know, I didn't really want to go on with it but I was being polite. And then this from him:

"Hey, could I ask you something - do you think we could pray together?"

Now, I'm an atheist and a fairly militant one at that. What was I to do though? I guess school this pulpit-pusher hard. But no. He reached out and lay his hand on my shoulder ...and began to pray.

As long as he is praying to the gods of airline safety I'd go with it. Otherwise perhaps telling him how much I enjoy reading Dawkins.

Speaking of prayer, on an MH flight a few years ago there was a noteworthy quote that appeared around or after the end of the safety video. Wording may not be exact but it was along the lines of:-

This flight is only possible due to the grace of Allah.

Not quite as bad as what the OP experienced but I can remember flying home from Europe as a youngster. I fell asleep on my seat neighbours shoulder. Problem being it wasn't the right neighbour. Bit awkward from the next 10 hours or so but I got the right shoulder in the end...:(

Not possible for everyone to get out of the aisle seat easily when the seat in front is reclined. For me to get out I'd have to slip towards the floor and roll sideways and get out. Not easy. And I'm not going to do that as that means I'm being considerate of the person in front when they couldn't care about the person behind in the first place. Doesn't make sense.

P.S. Not all aisle armrests lift up.
