I've been looking to buy a fare to Asia in mid February from Canberra/Sydney. Though my destination is Langkawi I could fly to Singapore, KL, Bangkok,... and enjoy myself for a few days before making my way to Langkawi, Malaysia. I am a QC member, but they always let me down so I am not OneWorld loyal to say the least though it is preferable.... For some reason the fares are all $500+ o/w. which strikes me as expensive. Cheap fares always add so much in extras that I seem to be tending for Jetstar... Or should I just do AirAsia? Suggestions? Maybe even J class?

Scoot to SIN, Air Asia to KUL or Jetstar to SIN/BKK/HKT (the first two via MEL) are the usual "cheaper" options out of SYD. Air Asia and Scoot also tend to have reasonably priced "Business" class.

If you can't find anything reasonably-priced out of SYD, have a look at Scoot or Air Asia out of OOL. (Flying SYD-OOL to meet the flight is easy and inexpensive.)

With the exception of Low Cost Carriers, international long-haul fares are usually more expensive on a one-way basis than return.

QF, SQ etc, all likely to have proportionally higher one way only fares.

If you are flying Low Cost, JQ has a sale on at the moment - from major hubs, around $500 in 'business' class. Around $250 in economy. Looks like some school holiday dates are excluded from the sale.

Perfect thank you, I tried booking. I'm too tired now it seems, will try again tomorrow morning. Filled in all the fields, added wrong credit card number and then it timed me out!! Part and parcel of cheap carrier fares.

Have you tried searching on Zuji? Not my favourite booking engine but I did find a reasonably priced one-way airfare on there with EK/QF coming back from Asia that I did not see on any other website.

I did not find the great Jetstar flight specials on the usual booking engines (I forgot Zuji) but did on Jetstar's website. I am now flying Syd-Bali, have 2 nights in a nice hotel to recover from flight (I have cystic fibrosis and flying is tough on me) then onwards to coughet where I will be met with friends and sail away on a sailboat to Langkawi. Tot. airfare and 4 star hotel for two nights in Bali was roughly same price ($5-600) as Sydney coughet direct and I get downtime in between, so I am happy. Hopefully there will be a qantas club that lets me in here and there.... which i doubt as my GC seems to be useless unless I actually fly Qantas it seems. There are cheaper flights for different months of course. Thanks to MEL_Traveller thumbs up on Jetstar.

With the flight from Bali to coughet, is that direct or via Singapore?

1.5hr in Singapore :)

I did pretty much the same trip last year (BNE-DPS, 2 nights, DPS-SIN-HKT). You'll get QC access in Sydney and in Singapore (if your flight transits Singapore after 2:30pm when the lounge opens). It was all very straightforward....

I did this same route few months back (June 2015). Bussed it up to Sydney. Did Malaysian Airlines SYD-KUL-LGK on a one way ticket. Then bought a cheap ticket LGK-SIN on Air Asia and then Emirates SIN-MEL-CBR. All up high $700s
