So was booked for our annual trip to cairns in June but unfortunately just before easter i was rushed to hospital with a bleed on my brain. I have had the surgery now and all seems to be healing but i have been told by the doctors not to fly for at least 12 months.

As my tickets were only red deal / sale fares i completely understand that i am not entitled to a refund only a voucher minus the cancel fees.

Has anyone managed to get a refund from Qantas under "extenuating circumstances"? I cant even find an email address to contact them on. I have tried facebook (no reply) so was hoping RedRoo might see this.

How did you pay for the tickets? Any chance you used a credit card with built-in Travel Insurance?

Edited apology: Should also have said "sorry to hear of your circumstances - hope you make a speedy recovery".

Sorry to hear what happened. Hope you make a speedy recovery and back in the air again soon.

I had chicken pox ~5 years ago and spent 11 days in hospital. I was due to fly to Thailand. Called Qantas and the consultant offered to change the booking and waive change fees. Unfortunately I still hadn't recovered quickly enough and had to make more changes and this time there was no way to avoid the change/cancellation fees.

I guess you can only try and see how you go.

Sorry to hear about this. I had the opposite issue in February - a clot in an unusual place so have had to cancel several trips.

Qantas were very helpful but fees were still charged - they just didnt deduct the 5,000 points penalty from a points booking.

Jetstar - even with a fully refundable airfare it was torture just getting them to cancel (no, I do not want to go to Hawaii in six months time - I want to cancel) and then they have only just refunded the money.

As others have suggested if you paid by credit card with Insurance then they might cover the gap. I am in that process right now. Its been five weeks since I lodged the claim and they want so much info. And keep asking for more. Probably designed to put me off continuing.

Its funny as Airbnb (who i book the accommodation through) just asked to send through the medical certifcate showing what i had done and refunded the money in full less than 24hrs later. Now that service. Qantas so far has been silent.

But really this is what travel insurance is for. Qantas don't have to do anything for you. Its just nice when they do. That is the deal with discount tickets.
