Hi All,

I've searched and read every question relating to minimum LAX transit times, but they're all about inbound to LAX from AUS.
I'll be coming into LAX from YYZ via SLC.
It is my impression that I will clear US customs in YYZ before boarding the plane, hence not needing to do so in SLC for the transit.

My QF flight leave LAX @ 2320, and I was hoping to get a flight that arrives at 2117. Is 2 hours enough time to collect bags, checkin in a re-clear security?
As far as I can tell it would leave me 1hr from landing to checking including baggage reclaim, then 1hr from check in to clear security and make it to the gate before take off.

Am I cutting it too fine? Unfortunately there are no available mid/late afternoon arrivals on the day, so it's either arrive middayish and wait until 11pm, or arrive 9pmish...

Thoughts? Experiences?

At least outgoing security clearance is much quicker now. Just empty pockets & put EVERYTHING into carry-on bags. No need to remove shoes, laptops etc.

I'm guessing separate tickets? That's possible but too close for comfort IMO

If separate tix that's too fine for me. I had a similar scenario for an upcoming flight ex LAX and ultimately decided on the earlier flight arriving into LAX for that piece of mind.

Remember that QF/VA International close checkin 1 hour prior to departure, so when you add in time to collect luggage and make your way to TBIT counters, that doesn't leave you with much of a safety net for any delays. Insurance won't cover you either.

If it was on a single ticket, possibly, as more than half the terminals are connected via underground tunnel without needing to clear security again.
Separate tickets, not enough time, with the need to clear security and immigration twice, as well as possibly change of terminals.

Can you do this if you have to collect baggage and recheck. I thought that meant going airside in the US.

Would be possible if you can get bags tagged through.

I'd be concerned about a two hour transit at LAX on a single ticket in either direction.

Don't do it!

For me? Absolute minimum:

Outbound from the USA ... Three hours.

Inbound to the USA ... Four hours.

With that I have run it close at times.

(Cancelled flight from SFO; 75 minutes through cudtoms/migration at TBIT.)

(Note that I have lounge access if I am early.)

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
I've now decided to change from DL to AC, arriving 5pm instead of 9pm.
Hopefully the VA AC tie up for FFs will be sorted by Jan 2018...
