Every year I visit our key supplier who happens to be based in Porsgrunn, Norway. No matter which way you cut it if your fly QF it takes 36 hours door to door each way.

Because my mum is in Johannesburg I use one of the legs to visit her. I also had an opportunity to spend a few days in Copenhagen so the travel was:

Out MEL-SYD-JHB-LHR-OSL-(return train to Larvik-cab to Porsgrunn)-OSL-CPH
In CPH-LHR-DXB-MEL

The Good:
  • Chauffeur service
  • Gautrain in JHB to get to Sandton (come on Melbourne even third world countries have an express airport link)
  • Points upgrade to F on return leg (60,000 points well spent = 60,000 points earned on the trip anyway)
  • QF staff all the way (I had BA on the non QF legs)
  • BA F Lounges at Heathrow
  • Emirate F Lounge in Dubai
  • The Grand Hotel in Oslo
  • Copenhagen - first time and loved it
  • Rail travel (actually all public transport) in Scandinavia
  • The SCs - 600+ (there really should be a medal for those (me) that go WP through the weekly Y commute grind rather than the fast track through INT J)
  • The A380 - what a fine machine

The Bad:
  • BA service (more the apathetic)
  • QF sloping beds on the antiquated 747s that do the SYD-JHB run
  • Having to fly to Sydney to fly over Melbourne four hours later to go to JHB
  • Having to always fly back through LHR

The Ugly:

  • Hotel value in Scandinavia
  • The prices of pretty much everything in Norway (makes Denmark seem cheap)
  • Heathrow - not even a mother could love that child
  • The outdoor spa at Farris Bad (Larvik) on textile-free Wednesday (my room overlooked this adventure)
  • Some would say my dress code in the BA F lounge - shorts, t-shirt - ready for bed

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

How many used Gautrain in JHB in each direction?

It was comfortable each way and I've never had to stand or felt overcrowded. I would definitely recommend it if going to the JHB northern suburbs or Pretoria. Security is very good.
