I am off to Europe in July 2017 and both Amsterdam and Tallinn are on the itinerary. Travelling with the gentleman and the little man who will be 3 years old. Looking for recommendations on hotels - central, so it is easy to get around, and family friendly. Happy to pay at the higher end of the price spectrum if it is quality. Any tips are welcome!

At Tallinn, we stayed at the Radisson Blu. Nothing exceptional, just a good hotel, with usual facilities, just outside the old city; easy walk. Very nice rooftop bar.

Tallinn-it is a while ago but we rented an apartment through the Red Group & found them to be very good.
For Amsterdam I would recommend having a good read of the very comprehensive Priceline guide on Trip Advisor-some great bargains to be had

Can recommend the Renaissance in Amsterdam, part of the Marriott Group. Good central location just 5 minutes by foot from the Central railway station. Clean, modern, you can't go wrong. Check out the reviews on Tripadvisor.

See hotel report for Crowne Plaza in town. Being refurbed as a Kimpton. Nothing too much trouble for the staff. Rooms decent size (for Europe).

Recommend.

Hi LadyC - as mentioned above Hotel Telegraaf is a great hotel. A few others I would recommend:

Hotel Schlossle - centrally located in the old town.
Three Sisters Hotel - closer to the Port, a short 10 min walk. Make sure to check out the cellar it is cozy and gorgeous. Its claim to fame is QEII stayed there for a night. It is a bit more of a walk though to the centre of the old town.
Baltic Hotel - located in the old town and a short walk to the shopping district / supermarkets at Viru Keskus.

One thing to consider is the old town would be murder on a pram! Not sure if your little man is still in a pram but it is worth thinking about if he is. There are hotels outside the old town but I don't know too much about them. A Hilton hotel opened in 2016 but it is a bit of a walk to the old town.

I wrote a restaurant guide a while back as below that you might be interested in. My last trip is in the trip report section too :)

Oh - and make sure you take the little man, and probably bigger man, out to the seaplane harbour. It is great for kids - Seaplane Harbour (Estonian Maritime Museum), Estonia

Thanks Ozmatt. The Hotel Telegraaf and Hotel Schlossle were the two I was considering. I was just re-reading your trip report and restaurants guide to make some notes for when we are there. Many thanks for both!

I can highly recommend the Swissotel Tallinn too. It's a little out of the Old Town (10-15min walk) but not quite as far as the new Hilton. Harbour View rooms are exceptional and often discounted. I always seem to get better pricing by ringing the Fairmont call centre than booking online. Obama and Hillary have stayed there when visiting Estonia.

Old Town is beautiful but it can also make things more difficult in terms of restricted vehicle access. Having said that, it's likely where you'll be most of the time.

Make sure you download the Taxify App, taxis there are really cheap so staying a little out of the Old Town isn't a big issue. Uber is there but not as well adopted as Taxify.

All the best for your trip!
