Amsterdam to Sydney via London. Can we exit airport for 11 hour layover?

As the title suggests we are booked on an award ticket from Amsterdam to Sydney (BA: AMS-LHR, QF: LHR-SYD) and we have an 11 hour gaps between flights in LHR.

As our luggage will be checked through from Amsterdam can anyone confirm if we can exit the airport and go and have high tea somewhere? Or are we just transit passengers and locked down so to speak?
I'm hoping we can leave as the AA lounge at LHR isn't that good to stay there all day.

of course you can leave.

You should consider taking a bus over to Windsor and visiting the lovely town and castle. There is regular public scheduled buses direct from Heathrow to Windsor. otherwise you could train it into London too, all very easy

Shouldn't be a drama unless you're on some wired visa restriction. I've done it before in Singapore to go to dinner whilst waiting for a plane. Jump on the paddington express to the city, it leaves every 15mins from LHR I think.

Assuming that you don't need/or can get a visa for the UK, yes you should be able to leave the airport.

ahh yes sorry I should have added the 'unless you need a visa' clause to my above post. If you are on Aussie passport, no drama

Thanks Folks. We've done Windsor Castle so the plan is High Tea at some fancy joint in London and maybe some window shopping. Be a nice way to finish the trip.

As long as no visa/passport issue is OK
But do not tell/ask the airline. At worst they may slug you APD, as if was a LHR departure & not a transit

no APD is due even if you leave the airport if your onward flight is within 24 hrs
